Green Day beats out Eric Clapton for a grammy

Most mainstream "punk" drummers aren't
Well, its a mistake to think that technical prowess is required, at all, for rock n' roll. Its not. Of course, sometimes it helps and sometimes it gets in the way. But its far from the definitive element of the genre.

Jazz, classical, etc... sure.

A live album shouldn't be up for Rock Album of the year anyway.

Isn't there a separate category for live albums?

You can be a mainstream pop punk band though, which is what Green Day was.

That's what they're marketed as, but if you were ever a part of a "punk scene" anywhere, you'd realize that punk isn't a style of music but rather an attitude. Bands label themselves as punk cause it gives them an edgy feel.

Mind you the word punk has gone through so many transformations and abuses by the recording industry that it has really lost all meaning, except to those few punks you'll see at small venues listening to crappy bands.

Mainstream is the antithesis of punk. You can't be a mainstream punk band. Mainstream punk is just rock, possibly labelled as punk for marketing reasons.

So what the hell are the Clash, then?

Actually for that matter, what the hell is "mainstream" if you're not using it as a synonym for "popular" or "accessible"?

Clapton is one of the greats, and Green Day is whiny pre-teen crap. But as others have said, it is the Grammys, and nobody cares about them.

while I agree that Clapton >>>>>>> Green Day with the general sentiment here, I don't understand all the Green Day hate here. I kinda like them, too. So sue me :p

It's like what Alternative Rock used to be, and what Indie Music is becoming.

I have no idea what punk is anymore, thanks a lot! I'm gonna go sit down in the corner and listen to some Enya.
I think you need to consider intent. Some artists are not aspiring to mainstream success, yet it happens. Some are.

I'd say that, like them or not, Green Day are more in the former than the latter. I live in NorCal and am about 3 degrees of separation from a couple of the members and from what I understand they are very good guys, if that matters.

I base my assumptions on what genre a band is on their music, not their attitude. Green Day (up until American Idiot) definitely sounded punk-ish.

I was also trying to find their other reference to the Grammys, where they are at the Award show for Homer's fake award and they say, "This is the most pointless award show." "What about the Grammys?" "I stand corrected." Then they have a disclaimer run below saying. "The producers of the Simpson do not consider the Grammys and award at all."
