grs1 - the roman legions

Bede says "Play on"

Looks like a nice settler factory on the river. As Mr. Burns would say with his hands crossed in front of his face, "Perrrrrfect"

Despite the large map, I'm sure you guys will be able to win this, even if it gets into the IA (maybe not MA though). You'll just have to remember to go heavy on the 'pults and artillery :D (that is, unless those are restricted too!)

I say move south, SE, or SW then settle. Move the worker to the cow or deer before moving. I hope we are allowed to use Pults, and artillery.

I hope we are allowed to use Pults, and artillery.
That's not a question of beeing allowed to. The idea was to play without - as reads the setup, but I will open that for debate. With enough artillery you could conquer virtually everything - that's my 2 €cent

I think we need artillery. The Romes used Pults I believe. The game would be near impossible if we were not allowed to use artillery. Imagine the loses we will take cracking the size 12 cities in the industrial ages with no artillery. Also once we have our GA I don't think the game lets us build Legions anymore or am I wrong?

I think this debate should be reserved for if this game reaches artillary. No pults though. Hundreds of legions! Unless someone can offer historical evidence that the legions used pults.

Also once we have our GA I don't think the game lets us build Legions anymore or am I wrong?

Thats not true. GA has nothing to do with that. But there is in fact a problem: in PTW the Swordsman - and with it the Legionary - upgrades to the Medieval Infantry! I did not think of that because I had the Classic tech tree in front of me when I made the setup.

...let me think a moment about that.

I think our problem will be at Feudalism when we will have to make MDI's. We will be heading there for SunTzu's so I gues Rome will have to evolve in the Middle Ages. True legions would certainly have transformed into MDI if they would have evolved.

That really bugs me, but I can't do much about it, but play in classic, which does not have this path. 1st: I don't have civ3xedit, which is not included in conquests, 2nd even if I had, it is not that easy to change without breaking the upgrade path of the swordsman and gaelic swordsman too - they all cascade into each other.

It still gets worse with replacable parts, because they transfer into guerillias then. This could easily be changed in the editor, if I had it, though it would require a new starting save....

Well I think we should start, ok?
Next time I'll make my setup more foolproof.

Since no one objected I'd say we use Vizuroks roster
The rooster is the following:
Vizurok
Bede
grs
conehead234
Barbslinger

and get going.

Retract this post. Misread grs's earlier post.

We should just play the Vanilla civ version. Generate a new start and then we will not have to worry about Legions upgrating.

@ Conehead - I'm surprised you're not squallin' for a stack of Immortals... oops...wrong SG... :p

@ All - I could be wrong about this, but I think the game will always allow you to build your civ's Unique Unit, even if a 'superior' one is available...

So, I'll start the game, The Rise of Rome has started!
Well, Vanilla civ or PTW? We must decide it soon! :)

@scoutsout: I think the game doesnt allow it... but...
What do the others say?

If this will facilitate the game of COMPLETE legions I'm all for it. Much less headache and much more swordplay.

1. We should play PTW, as Bede can't play Vanilla and the save is in PTW.
2. Scoutsout is right, we can still build our uu - the Legionary even with Feudalism (just tested it).

So there is really no problem with getting feudalism, we just won't upgrade to medieval swordmen and continue to build tons of legions :)

@ Vizurok : I think you can start.

Let the Legions roll! :singinfg to the Cars tune "Let the the Good tmes roll' Just back from the saloon and checking in.

But only until you had your GA; the 1st Legionary victory after Feudalism will remove Legs from the build list (except for Civ3, of course). Also, any Legionary build would be switched to MDI everytime you discover a new tech...
