Guide to Hemispheres, Fractal & Big_and_Small Maps (image heavy)

Awesome thread, thanks so much for putting together a guide like that! The purpose of the hemispheres script, to be clear, is mostly because it almost guarantees separation by ocean. I put it together, as more or less an attempt to recreate the general idea of the continents script, but with Big & Small's layered fractal code to add much more of a random element. I think it works best with 2 or 3 "continents," as the higher settings were more added for multiplayer games for more balanced starts.

If you haven't tried it, it's good if you like a game where you start out in a subset of the world, then after the discovery of optics suddenly see a whole new world and new civilizations. It also helps extend the medieval ages, as IMO the tech pace goes too fast in games where all the civs have met at that point and tech trading goes nuts.

Thanks, I'm glad you guys found it useful!

SlightlyMad: I am honored by your presence. :) If you're still lurking around, I have a question for you: Is there any specific reason as to why the Toroidal/Cylindrical/Flat options are unavailable for most maps? It seems to me that it would be a useful setting to have for any map.

I love the map generator, it's one of the best randomizing and replayability-giving tools that I've seen in any game, ever. I only wish it had a little more configuration options at times for it to be completely perfect.

Thats quality thanks. I was looking for a thread exactly like this not long ago. These are the 3 best map types imo and it will save me loads of going in & out of world builder messing around.

It's just a matter of difficulty to implement vs. importance to the developer, I guess. In my case, since I based the code off B&S, and B&S didn't have it, mine didn't either. I could have taken the code from another script and worked it in, but since it's not even an option I ever use, I spent my time tweaking other areas of the script instead. Honestly, I wrote the Hemispheres script just for personal use, then decided to share it just in case anyone else wanted it too. The fact that Firaxis decided to release it with BTS blew my mind a little ;)

I have been playing a lot of Big and Small, Islands Mixed In, Low Sea Level lately. This has been good for if you like to found cities on small land bridges. :) It is very nice for blocking other civ's expansion, but keep that city fortified or else this strategy tends to make the AI a little cranky ;) Also no open borders with them obviously :P

Thanks for the very useful thread! Any more map types at all that you choose to make a guide to would be useful. I have actually never been brave enough to try out fractal or hemisphers yet but this will get me to do it :)

I'll be away for about a week, but will probably keep building on this guide with more map types once I come back since some of you find it useful!

Yeah it's a nice guide, so if you got the time... :)

So how does shuffle work with these maps? (or does it?)

Shuffle is a different map category, meaning it shares certain settings like World Wrap, but cannot be combined with other map categories like Hemisphere and Fractal. I will be able to look into that next week.

Great thread :goodjob:

I always play shuffle maps as i like the exploration factor in civ. All settings on random (leader personalities, ai civs, players civs, climate, sea level, if the option to randomize is there ill take it).

Not knowing beforehand what type of world you are in makes for a really interesting game. Currently Fractal, continents, archepelagio and pangea maps can be created using shuffle. But looking at your thread i wish more map types were covered under the shuffle setting. ie. Terra, big and small, medium and small and hemispheres. i think they would complement the others well.

Thank you Mortac, just what I was looking for this day. It seems my wish is your command ;)

Great guide! :goodjob: It should be conserved in the correct sub-section of this forum, so that it doesn't get burried here.
