Guide to Scouting

I learned a thing or two, and I've been playing for years. It should be useful for more inexperienced players I would have thought. Could it go in the strategy articles section?

I think it is worth it. It certainly made me think about things I hadn't thought about.

I also think that TMIT's "Hug the coast" maxim should make a final article, and why (I assume it's because there are fewer tiles for animals to hang out in).

One thing I'd love to know is a way to decide which way to send a scout in, and which way to send scouting fishing boats in.

Information about the surroundings is more important than so-called goody huts.

Interesting, I don't find that at all. I almost always head straight for every hut I see. (But still through forests and hills, usually.)

I agree that the guide is over-theoretical - or more to the point, it's narrowly focused on one part of scouting. It does a great job of discussing that one aspect. But of course there are important factors it doesn't discuss.

Ironically that's one of the more abstract things to explain, and would be under the arcs section (left unfinished). The pattern and diagonals explain themselves in one screenshot, but talking about planning out general scouting directions is fuzzy. Which makes it difficult to write about.

Is this worth finishing? I'd rather not invest time if there's little benefit.

At least it was worth starting. The forum lacked that kind of info (there was one article hosted on the MP site but not on cfc iirc). Tx for writing it ( maybe should go into the article section to have a better visibility).

Good guide and there are some things I wasn't aware of yet, even after years of playing :) Thx.

I'm not sure if it's worth it for you to finish it or not, but it improved my scouting a bit and for rookies I'd imagine it would be valuable. There just aren't as many rookies these days.

Well, I actually learned something from what you have so far, if that's worth anything to you. (Namely, that you don't have to walk all the way out onto the "corners" of the land in order to find all your potential seafood tiles.) I'd suggest, as others have, including a few words about keeping your initial scout alive as long as possible.

This is off topic, but I have to add that I love your avatar. I can't quite make out the autograph at the bottom, but I'm guessing it's not Robin Ventura's. :D

Good article!

I wouldn't worry about the question of finishing it or not...there are many threads in the past that I started but never finished because of either a lack of spare time or a lack of interest. When I return to playing on a regular basis, I'll be sure to focus on the things that matter, so that I know that my spent time will be worthwhile!
