Hand Drawn Graphics

banestar- some of those "resources" look like units stripped from a VERY cool game called avernum...

SpincruS, let's just say that 'hope springs eternal' and leave it at that.;)

@Runamok Monkey: I have SO crossed my fingers for this pack to finish :). I won't use it in an epic game or so, but I already had a scenario in my mind, solely using this pack!

SpincruS, can you divulge any reason why this particular mod would look best with handdrawn? Or do you want to surprise us?;)

Well, IMHO, this modpack would look great for a medieval, or a pre-medieval fantasy setting (such as the world of Conan the Barbarian; just a simple one that just popped right now :)).

I might not publish the mod (I usually make them personal mods, since I'm too lazy to edit all civilopedia entries and such, and people would kill me if a single non-historical thing is present).

Great idea.

HAHAHA, I just realized that the good-ole warrior unit makes a great Conan.:D

But if you happen to be keeping to yourself a snake-man unit (with slithering snake lower body and reptilian-humanoid upper body) then I'd be very jealous.;)

For myself, this map is perfect for use in Far East Asian scenarios because of the monochrome-watercolor-&-pen style terrain (even if the mermaids and skulls don't necessarily fit). Thankfully, there is a huge library of quality Asian units in this forum.

Bane Star, I have a request:

If you ever get around to completing your terrain mod, would you incorporate some of my suggestions here?

1) have either a mini alligator or whooping crane inhabiting each marsh tile, so that we can easily recognize the tile.

2) have a mini snowman, snow-covered pine tree, or one of your original jagged hills decorate each of your tundra terrain (so that we can easily distinguish between grasslands and tundra).

3) have a runamok monkey populate some of your jungle tiles (because as is, the jungle tile is boring).
;)

Take care.

Yes, I understand this is a long long long dead thread, and the author has not been on this website for 15 years...but does anyone have the files for this? :please:

I have just successfully downloaded the file attached to the first post. "Copy link address" - inserted in a new browser window.

That is some major progress, but I fear it is far from the final file and will have a lot missing.

I just checked, and it is completed as far as I can tell. Coasts and oceans, roads, everything looks hand done except for airfield (though watchtower is done), waterfalls, and irrigation for tundra and desert. I suspect these may have been by choice.

This is actually a really good find, Aiken. I'm glad you went searching for it because I had no idea it existed. Very interesting terrain design. I'm going to use it for some video content. I wish Bane Star did civ cities as well, and how amazing would it have been for units? I hope Bane Star is okay, I see they haven't been around since 2006. I would guess they never finished the project. Still... This is pretty amazing work.

Looks like Volcano and Marsh terrains are also not done. But look at how good this looks!

The details are awesome. Oceans can sometimes show sea dragons. Coasts/seas can show mermaids. Etc...

That does look awesome. I don't mind a bit of faffing in gimp to create what is missing.

Not surprising, as this predates Conquests!

Update: Ok, Its been 3 months,
...
I'll edit this Post as I upgrade.
Interesting that we can't see edit timestamps from before the forum upgrade, but it sounds like this is indeed the final version as of his last post. And a good thing too: those zoomed out maps look great.

That is fortunate.

Now, very simple stupid question for you.

How do I retain the original graphics for the original game, and have this for another? Do I create a "Hand Drawn Scenario" or do I need two installs of civ?

Do I create a "Hand Drawn Scenario"
Yes. The simplest/clearest option would probably be to create a new folder+subfolders called e.g. ...[CivIII]/Conquests/Scenarios/Hand_Drawn/Art/Terrain, and drop all the hand-drawn terrain files in the "Terrain" subfolder. Having done that, you'd be able to copy/paste that file-structure into any other mod you fancied.

If you wanted to play an epic-game with that terrain, without permanently over-writing your current terrain-files, you could also open the Editor and create a Hand_Drawn.biq where the "Scenario properties" included the ...[CivIII]/Conquests/Scenarios/Hand_Drawn/ as the primary search-folder (and no other changes). You could then access that .biq through the Civ-Content menu — just like any other mod.

And if the various unit-, building-, goverment- (etc.) values are not altered, I think any games played on that .biq should still be eligible for your personal HoF.
