Hands-On with the PSP

Not even Final Fantasy III (Japan) or Feel the Magic XX/XY? I find that really hard to believe. :p

Industrial analysts are almost sure of a delay, might even be all the way back to Nov 05. But if it's to increase battery life, I'm all for it. :)

I've skimmed thru the games for DS; nothing that I want to touch...

just looking at the PSP there's nothing i want to touch.

If I bothered to look at either, I'm sure there would be stuff I'd not only want to touch, but play as well ;)

I would rather have the DS because I know Nintendo is very good at handheld games. Also, I'm less picky about the type of gaming (I wouldn't mind playing Tetris on a handheld console, but I couldn't see any time I'd play it on a regular one). If the PSP has the problems people say it has, I don't see why I would buy it, especially if it is more expensive (the time frame isn't a problem, since I don't think I'm going to rush out to buy anything anyway).

No. :p

Games-wise, I would prefer Sony ones.

As for final judgement on which handheld, I'd wait until both are out. I won't buy the DS, but might the PSP, depending on battery life. Will see.

geez... lets buy a system with 2 hours of power insteado of near 10!!!!!
10 over 2 = more game time

I could live with 2 hours of power if it had games I wanted to play. The games determine a consoles success after all, not how long it's battery life is. ;)

Sega Game Gear. Vastly superior graphics, was in color, and much smaller than the brick black-and-white (actually more like grey and green) Gameboy. Yet the Game Gear failed for one major reason: Battery Life.

Exactly!!!
Battery life succeeding is why Nintendo has always been on top of handhelds. Always!!! And they have great games. Too many to mention. Let's see some: zelda, mario, metroid, pikmin. There's a game for everyone.

None of which I would want to play. Really.

Like I'd mentioned, gotten the GBA SP and played a grand total of 4 games. Been collecting dust ever since...

I think Sony's aiming for a more matured market. And I doubt they'll really let out a product with such a glaring deficiency.

Sony's "target audience" of people of 18+ years is really designed to draw in more from the teenager audience. It sounds weird, but it's true. Teenagers these days in America are really concerned with being "cool" and playing games like Grand Theft Auto makes them feel more secure in their maturity. I'm not against GTA at all, but I'm betting that the vast majority of GTA fans are under 18. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, as I'm under 18 as well and GTA is a really entertaining game, but the fact remains that the majority of people who play more "mature" games are in fact teenagers.

Nintendo, meanwhile, is targeting everyone, as in gamers and non-gamers alike. It may be a hard concept for many gamers to grasp, but a lot of people have a hard time playing games these days. My mom is a great example of this, she has a really hard time with her hand-eye coordination to use the controller to play games. Yet with the DS, where the controls are to simply touch the screen, even that my mom can do. At least I hope she can, or else I'll lose all remaining respect I have for her... :p

And here's the PSP's (Japanese) price and battery life, releases in Japan on December 12.

Price is 19800 yen in Japan, which equates to roughly $185, meaning that the US price will be between 180-200, most likely $200. However, one thing to note is that price does NOT include a memory stick, which costs $30, and it's pretty useless to play games on the system without a memory stick.

The carrying case that costs $20 would also be nice, considering how much the media is praising the huge gorgeous screen the PSP has, one wouldn't want the screen to be all scratched up. And for handhelds, screens scratch up, no matter how careful you are with it. This puts the price at about $250.

There's a "value pack" for the PSP that will include the memory stick and the case, as well as headphones for a remote control, that will cost about $250.

Another thing to note is the $30 memory stick is only 32mb, which for gaming is alright but if you wish to take advantage of the mp3 player capabilities (which is why the headphones are remote control), you might want bigger ones, like 512 mb sticks that will run up around $100.

Oh, and all the pricing I mentioned is approximate US conversions of the Japanese prices.

For battery life, the system will have 4-6 hours for games, 4-5 hours for movies. However, this is with volume set to half. The 6 hours is with minimum lighting, the four hours is with max lighting. Also note that these times do not include using WiFi on the PSP, which will drain the batteries on any handheld system, DS and PDAs alike.

I think the pricing Sony set is pretty impressive, as I was expecting well over $200 for just the system alone. However, even then the price is a bit high, for me at least. I'm actually having enough trouble with my friends meeting the $150 price for the DS. :p

So when is Konami releasing Dance Dance Revolution for the PSP?
