Hard Limit on Civs?

I found it very frustrating in C3C that you couldn't add in a new civ without first replacing an old one. Does anyone know what the limit on new civs will be in this one? How about new leaders? It'd be disappointing if you couldn't just flat-out add new content to the game.

I have absolutely no proof of this - but I imagine since the interface is so moddable, you will be able to fit as many onto the selection and in-game screens as you like.

It was my second-biggest pet-hate in Civ 3. Things have advanced quite a bit in gaming since then. Instead of replacing lines in the linked .txt files, you will probably be adding lines to the .xml files meaning new content instead of replacements.

The limit in Civ III, II, and I is based in the code itself, only so much memory is set aside within the code. From my understanding it is simpler to code this way. Civ IV may havemore advanced code to allow more Civs

I am worried that there is a limit - a comment from someone who knows for sure would be greatly appreciated...

who knows - the SDK is delayed to early next year - perhaps if enough interest is shown - they might make an effort to add to the total number of civs (if they havent already).

My fear is that they are going to use expansions to add this feature though...

There is no limit to the number of civs, as stated in last Civrules'preview.

I think that was Civrules enthusiam talking - he goes on to use an example of putting 18 civs on a duel map...

I would agree that your interpretation on the matter would be correct if he used the example: "Hey if you want you can put 99 civs (or more) on a duel sized map"

Perhaps he will take the opportunity to state something like that here?

I find it unlikely that there would be no limit of civs on a single map, but that there would be a limit on the number of civilizations added to the game. I mean, if you think about it, it should be the exact opposite. Simply having an infinite number of playable civilizations will take up space on your hard drive but will not require the allocation of more memory during the game. If the limit is based on a preset on the amount of memory allocation, it ought to then limit the number of civilizations that can be played at any one time not how many civilizations are available for play.

I think it is likely that there IS a limit of civs on a single map - that limit is 18.

I hope not though - I hope that mods can add more civs to a scenerio (more than 18). The limit should be whatever processors and ram can handle, not a static number hardcoded into the game.

I agree, there probably will be a limit of 18, but I'm not too worked up about it... as long as there is a very high limit/no limit on the number of civilizations that can be added, I don't mind. I never play with more than 18 civs anyway.

I hope there's no hard limit on anything. We're already working on adding some missing civilizations to the existing 18. You can find it in my signature.

Well, I think it's more important that there be no limit on the number of civs that can be played than the number of civs available on one map... I mean, anything higher than 24 gets to be a bit unweildy and most of those civilizations will be wiped out fairly early on. I would just prefer it that there be a lot of civs to choose from. So that if I set my oponents to random, I really have no idea who I'll be playing with... unlike in the first version of Civ3 where if you usually played a game with 16 civs, you have no surprises since there were 16 civs to play as :p
