I have tried to play multi on several occasions, and every time, this happens:

1. The game starts (after 30 mins of waiting in the lobby or searching for a game, of course)
2. The loading screen (with the leader's portrait and description etc.) faces me for another 5 mins.
3. Finally the game begins. I hit "next turn" but nothing happens. I don't even get the "waiting for other players" except on rare occasions. The game doesn't freeze; it just does nothing.
4. Chat doesn't work. I yell "Hello? Anybody there?" and no one responds. The lobby chat seems to work, but not the in-game one.
5. Everyone leaves.

So...have any of you actually finished a game yet?

If you had added an option, 'I would play Civ5 MP if Firaxis had bothered to give us the simple courtesy of a "save game" option rather than relying on random autosaves' then I would have voted for that.

I have done quite a few games with no problems. The reason you can't move at the start means that everyone did not connect. I had this happen a few times. I personally play with people I know so I don't have this problem of waiting for games to start. The game is not as deep in MP and the AI is easier, but thats the reason you have other players. The AI are basically canon fodder.

This.
And i won't event think about returning there unless there is hard evidence the whole MP infrastructure has been fixed. I've got better things to do than witness the cowardly exits of silly pseudo_participants... heck, i'd rather suffer through hours of weird AIs gameplay -- at least they all algorithmically stay 'til the End.

yeah i finished quite a few

stopped playing after they broke the balance completely

I've played many successful mulitplayer games, though not with strangers. Playing with friends makes things a whole lot easier - you can send Steam invites to them, and you can pick up the phone and call them if something seems amiss.

Quite true.. the autosaves are consistently every turn, as far as I can tell, but the fact that you need to manually manipulate the folder structure if you want to save 2 different MP games concurrently is just baffling. I'd settle for autosave that used the game name entered by the host as part of the file name.

I answered this poll because I've played through a large number of MP games though they were all local LAN games. Perhaps this poll was meant to mean internet games? Clarification would be good.

Team based LAN MP cooperative games are allot of fun though you have to crank up the AI skill level to make it a challenge.

I have, but only 1v1 duel games. They're pretty silly, because as soon as you lose the capital you lose the game, and double moves are insanely powerful.

The last time I tried playing one, the game froze for me at a bad moment, resulting in my capital being lost the next turn. That killed any interest I might have had in civ 5 multiplayer.

I've played numerous LAN games with a friend on CiIV - alot of fun.
CiV LAN is a joke though - no animations for battles and movement (any way to fix this?), and the AI difficulty levels are skewed. Problem with no animation is that the game becomes more of a number-crunching exercise than it even was before, and all the atmosphere is sucked out of the experience.

Whenever I try playing multiplayer, we eventually run into unavoidable disconnects. Seems to mostly happen after declaring peace and gaining territory.

When i host games i usually finish them at 70-75% of time. When i don't know the host, it's below 40%.

Good computer and internet connection are important.

I can vote yes because ONCE I completed a tiny sized game with a buddy of mine where we allied up immediately and went killing the computers.

the 4 or 5 games after were drawing on so damn long we never finished them.

also: not being able to play with DLC we both own is ********.

I tend to finish about 50% of MP games that make it past turn 0. Most common reason for failure is losing synch & no reload.

I finish at least 80% of the games that START.

A sure fire way to make sure you get through a whole game is play with people you know on steam. Then if someone drops, you just reload and invite them back and the game is still going.

www.civplayers.com has a ton of players that you can play against who are reliable.

I've finished many CIV V MP games and there actually is the option to save, it's ctrl+s but only if you are the host.

I'll admit though that it is a pain in the ass really as it is full of bugs, lag and problems of many types.
