I would guess many people tryng a demo would be shocked to see that in order to test drive a game, they have to sign up for an account with a 3rd party program and give their information.

So you've never given your email address to ANYONE on the internet? EVER? :mischief:

Why "your information" is limited to be the Email adress? Is there a special demo SSA where this is guaranted? Can you point me to the part of the SSA claiming that no other data is collected and used if someones only register to test the game. :mischief:

Agreeing to the SSA means accepting some kind of not really specified data collection, not necessary limited to the data you give to create the account like you claim. But this topic was discussed already too often.

And a forum account [you create an account to post and to participate] and a demo of game [a test of a product to decide if it´s worth to accept the "contract / deal"] are of course completely comparable. Nobody never lurked (which can be seen as "test" of a forum) before he ever registered to a forum. Only forums which require a registration to even read posts would be qualified to be a - still limited - comparable example.

Edit: Oh, and even ignoring all the points above: How many of all civ4 players (surely a not too small fraction of the potential civ5 buyers) have ever registered here or at any of the civ related forums? All, 50%, 20%, 10%? The simplification from "i guess many people" to "persons who post here or another forum" is a bit misleading, or?

I find it hilarious that people are complaining about having to give Steam their email address........ on a forum where you have to give out your email address.

It's more hilarious that you don't notice the difference between the commercial nature of Steam vs the fansite nature of this forum.

why does every thread have to become a steam thread ?
get out

How exactly are these people going to find out about the demo in the first place?

When you create a Steam account, you only have to give a username, email address, password and security challenge question (https://store.steampowered.com/join/?). That's all! The same information you need to give here. Oh, and if you want to download from CFC, say a demo of Civ5, you would have to be registered. No difference eh? ;)

The only "user generated data" collected by Steam is in relation to program usage. Show me where it says it will scan your computer? (BTW, you can manually add a game off your PC to Steam, but it doesn't automatically do it).

CFC makes money from advertising and selling games (via Amazon). Steam makes money from advertising and selling games. Where's the difference? :mischief:

in the commercial nature of Steam versus the fansite nature of CFC, as I have already stated.

Steam isn't just DRM it's a marketplace, a game library, a webbrowser where you can find new games, including demos and videos of said games.

I don't see the issue here. You use a program to browse the internet, why cant you use a program to browse a virtual store?

answer to steam related posts in spoiler - can be seen as "off topic" by some

Spoiler :
How exactly are these people going to find out about the demo in the first place?

online news (you can read without the need to register), pc gaming magazine, friends*, ...

But i didn´t needed to register to read ;) [and iirc correct at least to download user generated stuff i didn´t had to register - but will log out and test it after sending this post]. But again: Agreeing to the SSA means accepting some kind of not really specified data collection, not necessary limited to the data you give to create the account.

I don´t question that the information you posted are all information you have give to create an account. I question that this are all information collected [and to provide an example - think at data like the IP adress - but i didn´t limited this statement to clear PII data]

Again, here we have only guesses, no legal binding statements made by Valve. Example "Scan your computer" - if civ5 will be shipped using the CEG function of steam and the demo will be a time limited full version of the game - steam will scan the hardware to generate the CEG.

I understand that Firaxis is not going to change the whole program and un-implement Steam from the game for a demo. I don't even care really. I just find it humurous that DRM sign-up's could be required for a demo.

I've never encountered a game requiring anything as such... but I'm sure they exist; I just haven't played them.

Everyone else went haywire on the Steam thing, I just asked if anyone thought it would be required or not.

If a game is free, there is no reason to pirate it...

What would be gained from pirating it, if it is already 100% free and available.

Or did you mean a free Demo can be pirated? I suppose anything can be.

I meant anything can be pirated. Being free does not prevent it from being able to be pirated.

I stopped reading after a couple of posts... No need to turn every single thread into a Steam discussion. There's a full thread dedicated to Steam in which, most likely, your views have already been voiced.

This forum should change names from Civ fanatics to Steam fanatics.

Steam and Civ are one and the same, since both are integral parts of the game and engine... so I see no reason for the hostility against Steam.
