I'm playing as England on King, Marathon speed, tiny map. I've founded a religion, I have a Shrine (but no Temple) at my Holy Site, and I have 320 faith. But I can't purchase any missionaries with faith. The Civilopedia says I need only a shrine (and a temple for apostles), but this page says I need a temple: http://civilization.wikia.com/wiki/Missionary_(Civ6)

So, do I need a temple for missionaries? In a Marathon game, that's 30 turns of production, and I'm in the midst of a war. So it'd be nice to know one way or the other. Thanks in advance.

Th required infrastructure is a shrine, so the civilopedia is right and wikia is wrong.
The only reason I could think of is your religion is not predominant in the city you're trying to faith buy the missionary.
Do you see the matching icon of your religion on the city bar? Could you post a screenshot of your city?

It must be a shrine/holy site in a city without your religion? I've done that before.
Or as someone said above, maybe you have civilian units on both your holy site and city center, seems unlikely though?

This happened to me, and people were trying to say it was my fault. I know how the game mechanics work (for the most part ) ).

I think the problem was either I waited too long to build my first missionary because I was preoccupied with other things, or because my holy site was built so far away (3 hexes away to take advantage of a natural wonder). I haven't had the problem since. This time I make sure to pop a missionary as soon as my religion is founded, and not wait. I think waiting too long caused the religion to "fade away".

Yeah, I waited a while to try to create a missionary because I thought I didn't have enough Faith; I'm playing on Marathon and I wasn't sure if it would be triple the usual faith. But once I hit 300 faith, I started to realize something was wrong. No civilian unit is standing on the holy site. My holy city has no faith at all, because I've been unable to make a missionary to convert it. I guess I could make a second holy site, but playing on Marathon in an all-Tundra start, that's gonna take a while!

Sorta frustrating. I don't care so long as I don't lose a religious victory, but half my cities are already converted to other faiths. I suppose I could surround the remaining ones with meat shields. Bah.

that's it then. you waited too long and you've been punted from the religious game.

To build any theological unit, you need a religion to be majority in the city (doesn't have to be yours, but ofc you'd build the other religions units).

But you can't just make a new city and a new holy site somewhere else, because it won't get your religion automatically. That only happens to cities with holy sites when you found the religion.

Probably the most obvious time this occurs is when someone chooses to build Stonehenge in their capital (without a holy site) and a holy site (after founding the religion) in a different city.

Basically your Holy City after you founded your religion got converted out from out from under you; this is very easy to occur (especially if Stonehenge used to found a religion); there is an active thread in S&T about this.

I spent an entire game spreading religion to all my cities only to realize that my original city had been converted to another religion, so I had been spreading the wrong religion the entire time.

Thanks. Still, my holy city is one of my few cities that has NOT been converted. It just shows my Pantheon icon -- and yet I still can't build a missionary (or apostle, now that I have a temple). So frustrating. I have maybe one non-converted city left, but I'm thinking at this point I'll just forget about it and hope I can avoid losing a religion game.

Pantheon symbol means the city has no majority religion -- which means no religious units.

Pretty much the same case as me except I didn't have anyone converting my other cities, as I was very isolated. I just failed to build a missionary as soon as my religion was founded. You should be able to do this if you have a holy site/shrine. I haven't tested with Stonehenge as I've never been able to build it (even at Prince level). You should have the faith because you are accumulating faith while you are accumulating GP points. Since GP doesn't come from faith anymore, you should have some accumulated. So first thing I do is build (purchase) a missionary and spread it to my second city which I tend to get up early. Although after reading the strategy threads, I think I'll just avoid the religious game. It really isn't worth it. But it's fun to do a few times since it is a feature of the game.

You won't necessarily lose a religious victory. If in doubt, just conquer the dominate holy city.

Thanks, guys. I had no trouble founding and spreading a religion in my first game, at standard speed. But in this game, playing on Marathon, with an all-tundra start, it took me forever to get that shrine built. Even though I had founded Protestantism,by then it was too late. Live and learn.
