I was typing at the computer a few hours ago, and lightning stuck the building across the street from me. From the corner of my eye I saw an amazingly bright light that filled that whole corner of my vision. And it made an amazingly loud crack, like a gigantic whip.

So, what's the closest you've been to lightning, or some other dangerous and rare weather-phenomenon?

(Is this thread pointless? Maybe. :p)

I think my car was struck by it once. At least it seemed that way--scared the bejeezus out of me too!

The sound of Lightning is called "Thunder".

Yes, but that is terribly distorted. Lightning, up close, sounds like a gigantic whip. :p

EDIT: Titled edited to silence the critics. :p

@ Allan2: Was your car damaged at all?

Don`t worry Cgannon64, I know what you are talking about- nothing like thunder- more a searing cracking sensation. I say senstaion because describing it as just a sound doesn`t do it justice.

No. But when it happened, it shook. Or maybe that was me jumping in my seat! There was a gigantic thud on the top of the car (and I heard the "whip" sound too), but no damage.

Pretty nasty lightning storm, eh, CGannon?

I jumped a couple of times while reading today.

ps. Inside a car (with the doors and windows closed) is about the safest place you can be if struck by lightning.

CG64,

Well, that happened to me not to long ago.

I was confused at this post until I remembered you're in Manhattan. :p It was a nasty, all-day thing, with the center of it passing over my house several times.

Not much can make me jump (nerves of steel and all that), but if I hear a deafening crack of lightning in the close proximity, the instinct for survival is too hard to ignore, and it scares the beejeezus out of me.

Oh, I think I've heard that one too ... and the short but hard shower that followed. Didn't make too much of it though.

I was vacationing in the Outer Banx (NC) and my family was on this unbelievbly small bridge. Then, this bolt of lightning passed only 15-25 yards away from us into the water. Scared the living **** outta everyone. Weird thing is, right when we hit the other side of the bridge, the storm was over :hmm:

One time I was in a Tornado.

At Universal Studios in Orlando.(It was a ride, hahaha!)

I had you guys going for a while to!

Some lightning struck in front of me (a few weeks ago), but it was a safe distance away. It was definately blinding. I said something religous then keeped walking on the sidewalk.

We had a storm that came in the middle of the night earlier this spring, I had lightning strike twice almost 10 seconds apart about 20 feet from my bedroom window. The bolts were blue and they made a loud weird crackling popping sound, startled the hell out of me. The next day I found out it did a number to my Monitor, VCR, one of my TV's, a portable fan, and a stereo receiver. My neighbors lost their whole computer system from the storm. The National Weather Service had reported over 6000 cloud to ground lightning strikes with that cluster of storms. :scan:

I've seen ball lightning a few times before. It's quite a sight to see.
