HDMI Laptop to TV Audio Problems

Ok, I tried to connect my laptop to my TV via an HDMI to HDMI cable and I set the audio to come through the TV speakers. The problem is the sounds come out very distorted and almost sound like something out of an old 8-bit video game.

I've connected this same laptop to other TVs with the exact same cable and the audio was perfect. This leads me to think that the TV is the problem but I have no idea what the issue could be or how to fix it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Work your way through all the audio menus on the tv and see if you can get a different outcome.

Tried that and it didn't work. I have tried all the most common solutions to the problem, which is why I'm asking for help. I'm hoping there is some solution out there that I overlooked.

So the HDMI cable and the laptop have together transmitted sound perfectly fine to another television?

You could check the sound device in Nvidia's volume control, i.e., check to see what device it is outputting sound to. I would normally assume this problem would lead to no sound whatsoever on the TV but it is worth a shot. Not familiar with Nvidia's audio controllers but on my AMD, sometimes it likes to switch to some other device that is not my receiver for no apparent reason. Digital connections are weird like that.

Failing some audio setting on the TV or the computer, and assuming the HDMI cable is fine, then it sounds like the HDMI-in on the TV is some older HDMI version that is not communicating with your laptop properly.

That is something I was considering since the TV that isn't working is from 2005 and the other TVs that worked perfectly were no older than 2008.

If that is the problem, is there anything I can do about it or am I pretty much screwed?

Pretty much screwed I'd say. Do you have a stereo near the TV? You can hook the tv up via HDMI, and hook your headphone jack on the laptop up to the stereo via a Y-cable.

You could try that into the TV as well but the TV may just try and take the sound from the HDMI and override the analog sound... but maybe try that first?
