apparently, according to the contributors to this thread, everything has to be right by principle. you have to take the term "american" and deconstruct it to its bone. nothing can be right by tradition - that is, the way a word has been used by people over centuries can in no way contribute to its rightness.
well, i'll tell you. i could bring up, on principle, the fact that the United States of America is the only country on earth with "america" in its name. but rather, i'd bring up this: the american dream. the american way. american style. american rock n roll. american arrogance. american beauty.
when i say any of those things, is anyone, ANYONE, confused about the meaning of america? does anything thing, just for a second, that i might be talking about brazilians?
