Im starting play civ2, but im having some problems! Dont matter wathever i do the guys wants my tech and stuff if i dont give, they declare war on me! WTH! what should i do in the beginning? Where can i find a strategy guide?

Im playing in King Difficulty! :/

The computer gets to compare it's strength to yours to determine how it reacts to you, modified by the level of difficulty you are playing at. Odds are the your civ is weak (not enough military compared to it's miiltary) and they seek to exploit you.

Find them first!

Hi there,

First off, if you are just starting to play civ 2, I'd pick a lower level.
My first game I was warlord then moved up one level per game until I was comfortable.
A lot of the success I had was in picking my spots for my cities.
If you look at the pattern of "special" resources, you can get spots where there are four resources within the city limits.

Another thing I've done is use the terrain to my advantage. If the bad guys are coming, I put good defensive units, on mountains in the path of the bad guys between them and my cities. Your units will prove too tempting a target and they will attack them. On a mountain you get a big defensive bonus. For example, I'f you have a fortified phalanx on a mountain, it will defend against at least 5 horsemen.

The other civs will treat you badly if you are ahead of them. They will declare war often. It is just part of the game. Build lots of cities. The more you have, the greater your collective output and ability to churn out units. Connect all of your cities with roads and build roads in all squares within the city limits.

There is so much to say that it is hard to remember it all.

There are lots of posts here with good strategy. Look for posts by starlifter. His posts helped me out a ton.

A big tip would just be to frequent this forum and read often.
:)

humm, but im pacific... :/ so i dont build much combat unitys in the begin of the game! :( And they keep coming...

Other level of difficult? But the others lvls sux...your cities dont revolt and stuff... :/

If you are a pacifist and don't build defensive units in the early game, you will not likely be around in the mid game! The AI is aggressive and will try to stamp you out. You must learn to build defenders and also improve your cities.

Use city walls, they are impenetrable until your weenie ancient units are attacked by dragoons or better - hopefully by then you'll have gunpowder, putting them off until after cavalry, etc. The arms race is important, even if it isn't key to your strategy.

Put defenders outside your cities - on good terrain, inside fortress improvements (allowed with construction). The fortress doubles a unit's defense strength, terrain enhances it further.

If you have a poor defensive position, keep the enemy calm by giving him techs that can't hurt you. If he wants pottery, give it to him. Or mysticism, or map making, whatever you think is harmless. Doing this in regular contact works well - waiting until they make the demand is often too late, it will only delay the sneak attack a few turns. Good luck!

OK. You need to go to the War Academy first. It has hints and strategies for every style of play.

In addition to that, look back through some older threads. They have tons of info about the game. If you have any specific questions, feel free to post them.

I always played the isolationist and I used a strict 'Offensive Defense'. I would patrol my territory with fast movers and strong attackers and kill anything that came too close. They would be supported by defenders on terrain with good defensive bonues that was also at choke points. That kept the AI away from my cities and allowed me to expand. Then I would just expand my circle of domanance.

You can't expect to play the game and not fight. That is the only way the AI has any clue how to interect with you.

If I were you I would try to build the Great Wall. All the others civilizations will keep on asking you for money but you can deny and they will have to make peace with you anyway. They will only break the peace treaty if you are too powerful, but in that case that is not a problem, just smash them. You have to take care when the effects of the Great Wall expires, but till that moment you can have a quiet and peaceful game and develop a good army.

A thought comes to mind while reading Duke o' Marlbrough's post. Patrol with cheap units - warriors and horsemen - and use the zone of control to keep the enemy at bay. If they sneak attack, you only lose a wimpy unit, and have time to prepare for their advance. After writing, I'd patrol with diplomats. If a good unit comes by, bribe him. As long as your diplomat is closer to your own cities, he can't get expelled by the enemy units.

you should also know that the ai of mge is extremely hostile. They will reset their attitude every turn. They will hate you no matter what.
Fortunately, this bug does not ruin the game.In fact many prefer it over the more freindly ai of civ2 2.42 or "classic".You just need to defend more. You'll need a few strong units at all times. You should not be totally distracted to war effort(unless you want to) but be prepared.Be on a high state of alert :)...whatever that means.
Be aggressive.Don't put up with their crap...but be patient :)

confused yet? ;)

don't be afraid of parting with a tech. Its beats an invasion when you are not prepared. As you gain in military might, you can tell them to push off and bring it.

:crazyeyes As previously noted;WAR acadamey was what I found really enjoyable and help full. The other thing is,in my opinion;:p ENJOY:rolleyes: it's agreat game

Communism all the way! Perhaps a few games with Democracy if you aren't on bloodlust (which I usually use). And regularly use your 'native' civ. By your name it could be French, German, Viking, Spanish, Roman, Greek, Russian, English, Celtic (if you're a Welsh patriot), et cetera. God, this is such useless advice! Oh well. PS- The British Empire was the second largest ever!:p
