I'm currently in a game where I have the northern and southern portions of a large continent, with the Chinese between me. I have most of my main cities in the north, and a few new cities in the south.

I have my workers on automated to clean up the pollution tiles. What I'm finding is that if there is nothing for the workers to do, the computer keeps trying to send them south (through the territory held by the Chinese) to work on my cities there.

Only problem is, when they cross into Chinese territory, Mao gets quite upset. I've had to resort to leaving all my workers on manual - which is quite a bother.

Has anyone else experienced this? How can I keep them on automated, but insure they don't go straying into enemy territory?

A few possible solutions:

Shift-P automates to clean pollution only (hopefully none of your southern cities has pollution).

Shift-I automates to work only the city that it currently is in (spread them around your cities manually, then when in a particular city, Shift-I, and if nothing needs to be done, fortify until pollution comes up again)

Best idea if possible- Get a Right of Passage agreement with China, then the workers can use China's roads to get to your southern cities, without making Mao mad.

Is there a way around China (another country or by sea)? If you can, send a bunch of workers to your southern cities by ship and get those areas improved so your workers won't need to go there.

I like the Automate worker in Civ III much better than Civ II. But, it does some strange things too ;)

It once sent a worker way off to the north building a road to nowhere, when I finally noticed and looked around it was heading to an Iron deposit. I guess I could've had it build a colony when it got there.

I had a RoP with Rome once, the workers kept going over there and cleaning up pollution. It probably helped w/ global warming. :p

Bamspeedy: Thanks for the tips!

I'll be using the Shift-P command in my current game - I just want the workers to clean up the pollution - and no - there isn't any pollution in the southern cities.

As soon as I can get some galleons and transports back to port - I'll send some workers south since I don't have a land route to my southern cities except through China - and the RoP agreement option doesn't come up on the diplomacy screen yet - still some techs to be researched for that.

I too have had similar experience with workers building roads to nowhere...

Thanks again for the help.:)

If you have galleons and transports, but still can't make an RoP it sounds like your problems are diplomatic, not technological. I think you can RoP with the discovery of writing, as long as you have an embassy.
