Hello!
So I've installed the patch and game, but when I try to start playing I get this:

XML Load Error
Failed loading XML file Assets//XML\Gameinfo/CIV4PlayerOptionInfos.xml

followed by another

XML Error
Load XML call failed for GameInfo/CIV4PlayeroptionInfos.xml.
Current XML file is:

followed by nothing.

I've seen this issue come up in the PC forums, mostly for folks running foreign versions of CIV4 on a US PC. Any mac users have this problem?

Thanks!
(just running this on a G5, nothing weird, no bootcamp, etc)

Have you checked to see if that file exists in your /Civilization IV/ application folder? You should be able to find the /Assets/XML/GameInfo/ folder, and it should contain lots of files, one of which is called CIV4PlayerOptionInfos.xml

BTW I note that there are several case differences between what you have posted and the actula file and fiolder names as I have them here. If those case differences are real, are you running a case sensitive file system on your Mac?

The file is there where it should be; not running anything case sensitive (I'm just a lazy typist!); I compared the playerinfo file to a few others to see if anything obvious jumped out at me... they all look pretty much the same.

Any other thoughts? I've tried reinstalling 3 times now, and always end up here.

Thanks!

You could post the file here and I can compare it with mine. Conceivably it's a corruption on the DVD, though difficult to believe.

Here it is.. thanks for your kind offer! :)
I'm going to try loading it on my old G4 to see what happens hopefully rule out corrupt disk.

Edit: Sorry about posting the whole file... see message below with zipped file attached.

In the meantime....
Tried to load on G4, and get the exact same error message!
Corrupt disk?

Did you modify the file in question prior to applying the patch? I ask because I did that with a Civ II patch once and the game wouldn't work. You have to have a virgin, non-edited/non-modded, copy of Civ IV on your HD before applying the patch to it. At least that was the problem with Civ II ... I had modified a file, and when the patch was applied, it ran into the modified file and didn't know what to do with it. Er, well, something like that.

Your file is identical to mine as well.

I tried editing my copy to include an invalid XML line and launching Civ4. It produced similar errors to yours, except there was more trace information than you have given. Here's my error message ...

Civ4XMLError.jpg

I then tried changing the file name so that the file would not be found, and I got ...

Civ4XMLMissingError.jpg

... which looks more like the error you reported. Soooo I'd guess that Civ4 is just not finding that file on your hard drive for some reason. I can't think what to suggest now, except to contact Aspyr Support and throw yourself on their mercy.

Thanks everyone--

Ironically, another shot at reinstalling on the G4 worked, but the G5 still gets the error message!
I'll keep trying to reinstall a few more times (no, the file wasn't edited at any point), and if it still won't work, I will definitely see if the folks at Aspyr can help out.....

Cheers.
(ps- so far, a small world in the earliest stages is working ok on the G4 with sound disabled)

Try repairing your permissions. (Using Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility, if you're not familiar with it.) It could possibly be that Civ4 isn't being allowed to read the file.

What is the full path leading up to the Civilization 4 install location? Any unusual characters, slashes or other oddities in the intermediary folders (or hard drive name)?

Brad,

I am having the same issue as above. Tried loading the game in the Application folder and in root folder. Both times I get the same error exactly as the screen shot above. No one seems to have a solution. HELP, my kids are waiting.

Hi,

I experienced the same problem with the game. It seems that you (and me) should have read the installation instructions more carefully. While usually in Mac, you install applications by dragging the application icon to the location you want to install to, this seems not to be the case with Civ IV.

You need to drag the application folder from the DVD disk to your hard drive or what ever location you're installing to. If you just drag the application icon, then it won't be able to find any of the XML files that are contained in the same folder in the DVD media.

Hope this helps,
Pietu

Thanks for that information. Upon reading the install instructions (again), I realized my mistake by installing the "Icon" onto the hard drive. You're right about MAC installs and those "other" installs.

Heh! The clue was in my first response to the original post:

Presumably you didn't even *have* a Civilization IV/ application folder! That should have raised an alarm bell.

Sorry to bring up an ancient thread but I am getting the same error messages. The difference is that the messages come up only when I attempt to load a mod. I am running the latest version of Warlords on an Intel G5, and I'm sure I installed properly. Thanks for any help!

Hello, welocome :wavey:

What mod are you trying to load, and what exactly is the error message you get?
