If there are any Emperor or Deity level players out there who would like to share the specifics of city specialization and the degree of detail needed to be payed attention to, I would be most appreciative.

*Basically, do you look at each tile where you wish to place a city?
*What are some major deciding factors in your city placement?
*What are your favorite tile improvements specific to city specialization?
*When is CE the better choice, when is SE, should I switch mid game?
*Is every single building for your cities based on city specialization?
*Should all my cities have aqueduct, grocer, market, and colosseum (infrastructure to allow for maximum population)?

The specifics of deity level play would definitely help me to overcome my severe shortcomings in Noble level play.

On high levels, units are often more valuable than buildings.

Have Hereditary Rule? Build an archer for 1/5 the cost of a colosseum.

Need +2:health: in all your cities? Instead of building 5 aqueducts, funnel the hammers into military, and capture your neighbor's wheat.

Need more gold or research? Build some cottages to increase your base commerce, instead of buying the multiplier buildings.

As unit cost increases, the buildings from the previous age become more affordable. But you need to evaluate the cost/benefits before you build them.

I'm but a humble Monarch player, but I like Dave's advice... I think I waste too much time on buildings and don't put enough into military... chances are if you are out "capturing your neighbor's wheat" you can probably capture a lil more than that be that cities or other beneficial resources ;)

Some general rules:

Only build building that will give MAX benefit, (dont bother with marketplaces/grocers in your cities if you have a high science slider).

Settle outwards to block AI expansion. Meaning if theres a rich resource site nearby, but not in danger on having an AI settle there, settle instead as close to the AI's as possible to avoid them from further expansion.

Specialize your cities.
Building Heroic epic / West-Point and settling all your great generals in one city will mean that this city can build high level military units non-stop.

Or, Building Temple of Artemis/Great lighthouse can bring in insanse commerce from trade routes.

If you like building wonders, build as many as possible, build national epic in this city and keep settling them to form a super city.

If your playing prince/noble... DO NOT waste GP lightbulbing, build the pyramids and keep settling them in your capital.

Practice will always make perfect I suggest you look around on some threads here like the ALC series, and Justinians University.
