To anyone that can help:
My family had a computer that stopped working a few months ago. I am not sure if the hard drive went out or not, but the computer will not turn on anymore as far as any of us can tell. I really want to install the game on our new computer, but I am not sure whether it is legal to do this if the other computer's hard drive, working or not and which I have no access to, still contains this. The game, as you probably know, installs 100% to the hard drive.

Can anyone who is 100% sure tell me if it is legal and not a violation of the license agreement to install the program on the new computer or is this an illegal copy?

P.S. Does this apply to other programs, too?

Thank You.

It is perfectly legal since if you ever get access to the old disk you can then delete it if you want and if you cannot access the old disk then it effectively does not exist there. This will be generally true of any program although the exact wording of licences may sometimes appear to say otherwise.

Since all you are doing is transferring to a new computer and not intending or even enabling any multiple use of the software, there is the simple practical fact that everyone has to do this at sometime.

Also, very practical, I don't think Microprose are expecting much revenue from the original game anymore.

Does this apply in the U.S. also?

Speaking of legal issues, how can I legally obtain graphics for a personal Civ page? (screenshots. etc.)

I tend to have two installed copies. One is on the hard disk, the other tends to be on a ZIP drive, to serve as a backup. If you are talking a modern machine, you may want a JAZ or Click! drive, or even a Kangaroo Dock and Disks. This prevents you from ever having to install the program, again. If you want *fast* installations, try copying all the installation files on to one of the above-mentioned media. Also, this tends to get around copy-protecting since the first time you copy it, it is a straight copy from DOS or your operating system.

I am thinking about moving to Linux. They have a FreeCiv that I want to look in to, but it isn't finished, yet. As of the last report, they were also trying to compile it for Windows.
