Can someone please give me the step by step process of installing the 1.29b patch? I am a new mac user and a new civ player as well. I have tried several times to download the patch, without any luck. I keep checking the version of the game and it remains 1.29f. Not sure if I am downloading to the right location or what the issue is.

Thanks.

How did you get version 1.29f? If you have managed to find that version then

(a) you may be unique. We know it was developed, but it has never been tested and released by MacSoft as far as I know

(b) you certainly don't need to "downgrade" it to version 1.29b2, as 1.29b2 is the beta version.

If, on the other hand, your version is actually 1.21f, or g, or something earlier, then here's what should happen ...

- Do you successfully download the updater file using the link in my signature? If you are using Safari then the Downloads window should show it as having been downloaded. If you haven't changed the defaults then it will be downloaded to your desktop.

- What happens next? If Safari is set to open safe files it should expand the downloaded file to make an installer in the same location called Civ3 1.29b2 Installer. If you don't have this then you'll have to double click the downloaded file to expand it manually.

- Next you have to run the installer by double clicking it. If you are familiar with Windows but new to Macs this may be a novelty, but one of the prices you pay for increased security in Mac OS is that installers can't run by themselves and infect your system.

- When the installer runs it should look for your Civ3 and update it. If there's more than one copy of Civ3 on your system it will ask you to select the one to upgrade.

- If that works the next time you run Civ3 you should see version 1.29b2 in the bottom left corner of the startup screen.

Please let us know which of these steps you are having trouble with.

oops...1.21f. My mistake.

From memory, as I don't have access at the moment, when i download it (from your signature) it will download to the desktop. Once I double click on it, it opens and it's just a text file. Nothing else happens.

Ahah! I see what's happening. I hadn't tried it in the latest Safari, and I just did. The problem is that Safari doesn't know what a .sitx file is so instead of downloading it as a binary file it tries to open it as text if you just click the link.

So to overcome that you right-click or control-click the link and select Download linked file. The current version of Safari persists in its delusion, however, and adds a .txt extension to the downloaded file name. So now if you double click the downloaded file you'll see random text, or maybe nothing.

Sooo. Rename the downloaded file, just deleting the .txt on the end of its name. Then it should expand when you double click it.

Great. I will try that this evening. I'll let you know the results.

Thanks for your help!

Ok, just tried to rename it and it did not work. when i open it, it's still just a text file. Am I doing something wrong here? I took the .txt of the file and it was the same result.

Any thoughts?

If you just edited the name from Finder, it's possible that OS X just hid the extension instead of deleting it. To check that take a look at the 'Get Info' dialog using cmd-I or the File menu. In the 'Name & Extension' part you should see an edit field where you can change the name of your file. There might also be a check box titled 'Hide extension'. If that's the case and the box is checked, uncheck it, then delete the unwanted extension again from this dialog. After that hit enter/return. That should be followed by an alert box asking you:
"Are you sure you want to remove the extension "..."?"
including a remark that this action might result in the document opening in a different program. Acknowledge that and you should be set.

Did you right click the download link and tell it to Download Linked File?

It worked here. Try downloading this disk image. Mount it on your desktop and it contains the updater you need to run.

renaming the download (rename & cut off the .txt end) worked here with the new safari.
you are prompted, whether you really want to change the suffix from .txt to .sitx., then it's recognized to be opened with stuffit expander.

The only problem I had with the upgrade, is that i have the german version & it adds all the upgraded units in my arts directory in english. I tried to move & rename it to german unit names, but the it wouldn't start in German anymore.

clueless :-(

Pleased to hear you are working. To reduce future problems I've replaced the link in my sig with the .dmg one.
