Help me beat warlord!

If you got a Great General, use it to make a Super Medic. Have the General on a tile with only one single other unit, preferrably a weak and fast unit, like a scout or chariot. If you don't know the math for promotions it's safest to use a new unit, one with no promotions. With only those 2 in the tile, choose "lead unit as warlord", or whatever it's called. This gives 20 XP to the single unit. Use those XP to promote Combat 1->Medic 1->Medic2->Medic 3. Now you have a unit that will heal any stack in 2 turns in your own territory and 3 turns in enemy territory. Keep that one close to the front line and always move in to heal the stack after they have attacked. Best to do healing inside cities you have just captured. And whatever you do, don't fight with the Super Medic, it's just not worth it.

Well I admit, that is actually a good suggestion. Too bad I already spent the general on my army (for some reason it wouldn't let me build an academy).

I've destroyed the french, and got 4 nice cities out of it, but now I have another weird problem. Before he died, Louis got Brennis to declare war on me, and even though Louis is dead, he won't talk to me. I don't actually know where his territory is, all I know is he has a small army by that one city I mentioned that got isolated. He doesn't move it, all he did was pillage a hamlet I had there. But he won't talk to me to declare peace. And he's not bringing in anymore troops. What I think happened is he walked through kublai khan's territory to get to me, then he lost the open borders agreement, so now his troops are stranded in my territory just because he can't walk through kublai's territory anymore. Luckily for me though, I do have an open borders agreement with frederick, which is allowing me to march my army up there and kill his. I think his problem is that he can't declare peace on me, bc then his troops would be moved out of my territory, but they can't move into kublai's or frederick's territories, so his troops will have no where to go if the war ends. I'm sending my army up there to kill them to see if this fixes the problem. And besides, like I said kubla was my next target anyway.

Of course, now I'm getting medieval tech, and I don't have the money to upgrade my army. Not sure how I'm going to get the funds, but more than likely kubla still has classical troops too anyway. If I wait awhile, then my army will be facing his more up-to-date army, which could be diseasterous. Not sure how I'm going to get all that money. I have like half of my cities building wealth, but really I should probably have them all build markets first, then wealth.

And yes, I did get some money out of pillaging louis' cities, but I only got to upgrade 2 troops with that (the 2 archers in my stranded city).

edit: killed his army, and then he was willing to declare peace, sadly though I lost an axeman. Hopefully it wasn't a high-level one. Honestly, that's pretty unlikely if it got owned by his inexperienced troops.

Right now, tokugawa has declared war on kubla khan! This would be an ideal opportunity to fight him I think.

Note about Military Academy: you can build it with Great General only after you got Military Science tech so don't worry about this option :)

You need to know Military Science in order to build an academy.

~250 words. A picture is worth a thousand of them.

Don't build the markets first--a market is 150 :hammers: that will multiply :commerce: to :gold: only when your slider is less than 100%. How many turns at a 0% slider will the market take to pay off?

You also don't need to upgrade every unit. Definitely don't upgrade your "military police" units (the one unit you leave in each of your core cities to reduce the unhappiness that's caused by having no unit in a city.) Even in your offensive strike force, you should be judicious about which units to upgrade. It may be more cost-effective to not upgrade units that don't have many promotions and either use them as "cannon fodder" or delete them and just have cities build new, current-tech units.

And yes, I did get some money out of pillaging louis' cities, but I only got to upgrade 2 troops with that (the 2 archers in my stranded city).
If we had a picture, we could tell if upgrading the archers in this "stranded city" was worthwhile or a waste of :gold:. I really suspect the latter.

If you don't know which axeman died, that means you're using "stack attack" rather than selecting which unit to attack. You'll be more effective if you choose which unit to attack.

It's impossible to give advice on this thread. No pictures, no save. Were talking warlord stacks too. Probably 3-6 units? The op is now randomly posting updates to a game no one has even seen. We have no idea which leader he is even playing.

Fact is he is not interacting with the posters here. Such a shame really.

Well I got myself a new situation which is more complicated than I expected: a vassal state.

I declared war on kubla khan, partially for his territory and partially to get tokugawa to like me. Well, i took a city or two, then tokugawa offered to become my vassal. I accepted, even though I didn't know what it entailed. I just ignored him really and continued conquesting. Took another city (and he took one himself too, note btw that he had the lowest population by far, and we were both taking on the guy with the highest population, well originally anyway).

After I turned off the game, I decided to look up vassal states. Apprently, doing that increased my maintenance cost (oops), but on the plus side I can apparently smooch resources off of him. And no, vassalling him did nothing for me diplomatically. We were both at war with the same guy, though I have noticed that all the other civs seem to see him as a 'rival'.

And getting back to my war, he's now throwing macemen and keshiks at me, so I think I need to stop my advance and upgrade my army before I lose any more units. I mean, I lost two units, which had a 1% chance of losing. Seriously. There's only a 1/10,000 chance of that happening. Such is my luck.

I think I'll call off the war and rebuild my army a bit. Upgrade the high level units I have, and build some more up-to-date units. Then I think I'll continue my offensive against the mongols. I'm thinking of going for a domination victory. And having my little vassal state will apparently help with that (well, tokugawa didn't really have much for territory anyway, but w/e). I've also noticed in the victory screen that it says I'll have by far the highest score when the game ends in 2050. I don't think I want to wait that long.

As for my little vassal, I don't know what to do with him. I have so many resources its ridiculous. I guess I can smooch some gold per turn off of him. And apparently I need to change his tech so he's not building up a military on me. Supposedly he's going to backstab me sooner or later (which wouldn't be surprising for tokugawa it seems, he won't do anything with you until he's 'pleased', and even then he'll still try to kill you, yeah, lovely guy).

Anyway, as to how I'm going to achieve domination? No clue. Even if I take all of kubla's territory it still won't be enough I don't think. Luckily, my spies have found brennin and ramses. The vikings already hate me anyway, I could take his land. He now has the highest population anyway.

As long as he's your vassal, he can't attack you. And unless you lose many cities, or he builds lots of them, he will be your vassal until the end of the game (as it usually happens). This also means he'll go to war against anyone you are fighting with, you'll always be allies in war. You can also tell him what to research, so he can research a technology you don't have (while you focus on something else) and then he'll trade it to you.

As others pointed out, we really need to see your game, a lot has happened at this point and we have no idea about the general condition of your empire. Either you attach a save file, or upload some screenshots showing your core cities and your borders. It would also be useful to see the technology trading screen.

Realistically, none of that would be useful. Whatever is happening with Tokugawa in this self-contained world is completely beside the point.

What would be useful would be if OP slowed down and learned to do things like take advice and communicate effectively, rather than ignoring everyone, using the word "troll" just to mean "someone who said something I don't like," and rambling on about the unsurprising consequences of poor game decisions.

Seriously, OP, it's time to step back, take a deep breath, and try again. Or not.

I almost feel bad for suggesting this thread. It seemed like a good idea at the time. I've never tried this kind of thing, but I've learned a lot just from reading those others have started. Thanks to everyone who has chimed in on them, like Pangaea, Seriael, elitetroops.

Looks like Seraiel made the right choice in pulling out early. Pretty obvious by now you're not interested in feedback, and even calling the people trying to help you "trolls" isn't helping at all. Some people are genuinely interested in learning the basic mechanics of the game, but unfortunately not all. Like the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink it.

 What a waste of everybody's time. Guess I'm shortly on the blacklist too now :D

Good luck with your game though. Maybe you manage to stumble upon some knowledge by accident.

This thread should be moved away from "strategy & tips".

A few points:
Just because you give advice does not mean another has to take it, no matter how right you may be.

Posting that someone is a troll is being a troll yourself. Report posts and do not go there.

Posting in a way in which you focus on the poster, demanding apologies or making fun, is trolling. If someone isn't listening to you, move on and just forget about the thread. To keep pushing is simply going to escalate the insults and minimize the content.

Please try to be kind to one another.
