Help me find a mod I'll like...

I've played dozens of mods, and while lots of them have elements that I like, none of them are good enough as-is. For a little bit of history, I tried civ4 long ago, played around with it until around the time that BtS came out and then went back to playing Rhye's of Civilization Random for civ3 because I hadn't found a civ4 mod that really did it for me. Now I'm back to give it a second try and again, after dozens of mods, there's still nothing that really does it for me, as-is.

Rhye's Random for civ 4 would seem the obvious choice, but no, the civ4 version plays very differently than the civ 3 version. I'm not into that whole attempt at history simulation that Rhye is. What I liked about the previous version was the slowed/limited exploration and expansion, the minimalist* and quality additions of units/techs/buildings/etc., the focus on maximum civs, the way that you could be the largest civilization in the world and still lose.

Can you point me to any mods that do all of this, or as close to all of this as possible? I'm willing to tweak a mod if need be, but I don't want to have to build my own from scratch just to play civ4.

*If there are any additions at all, they should match the quality of what's already there. I don't want thousands of techs/units/buildings/etc., just because you can add them, I want them to be good and meaningful additions - I'm more interested in added/changed gameplay than added/changed techs/units/buildings/etc.

Oh, you're a Kaelian! I still really recommend Legends of Revolution, it sounds like what you're looking for.

just play fall from heaven 2, or one of the Erebus mod-mod's.

but you want the "real world" to some end - i found Wolfshanzes mod to be nice, and i agree with you that too many mods have "a bajillion" leaders and units "just because they can" which takes away from quality.

Another popular mod is Realism Invictus and another is Caveman to Cosmos.

But if you want to have MINIMUM content added then your best bet might be to take modular mod features that interest you and mish-mosh your own thing together that way.

Have to agree that too many mods focus on quantity over quality. I would also reccomend the Revolution mod, it adds a key change to the gameplay in a pretty slick way (it's quite telling that the original mod had features like overseas colonies even before they were introduced in BtS).

C2C and Realism Invictus are both like that. Stunning and confusing amounts of *ahem* stuff, but not much real quality or though put into what goes in. This is, of course, my opinion and does not reflect the opinions of others.
