I don't know what I am doing wrong. I can barely play warlord difficulty, and that's only if I get lucky.

On any other difficulty, the computer's territory size and score sky rockets 1 million times faster than mine.

Can somebody give me the basic tips to stay alive and compete on harder difficulties

Go to the Civ War academy from the main Civfanatics home page. Also check out the strategy articles.

Basic starting tip: Expand as quickly as you can. Try to discover the wheel and iron it by allocate the mininum income to research which you will discover a tech in 40 turns (if possible trade techs with other civs). After that, set your research to zero. Since it is a lot cheaper to buy techs from the AIs, there is no need to waste time on research (at least not until you are strong and rich).

Always build a barrack first and start pumping out warrior, chariot, and spearman. When the time is right, upgrade those units to swordmen and horsemen and destroy your nearest neighbor. If you get this far ok, I'm sure you can figure out the rest.

Yes, once I get into the game and have a fairly good position, situation, and score ( like around 1200 A.D ) I can easily dominate. It just seems like the other civs are busting out settlers and warriors and workers and spearmen all within the first 5 turns.
