Hello, don't post here very often if at all but just wondered if I could have some advice from you more experienced players. (Not sure how this post is gonna turn out so I appolagise in advance)

Started a new game with Korea and not really sure where to situate?
In the end I decided to plonk my bum west of the gems. (so only 2 gems are in my border)

Also in the image below I am in danger of being boxed in. Just wondered if I should have grabbed land at a quicker rate at the start, or maybe start a war with my neighbours when i have sufficient millitary. What would you have done?

Actually what I did was because I founded buddhism and Mansa had hinduism I spread budd to the aztecs. So hopefully now it's only a matter of time when mansa declares war on me and my new pal.

I personally would have gone to the blue circle NE. You'd have the corn and the fish, be in a coastal position with a river and a lot of gems, the other side of the river could be cottaged for commerce or you could use the food resources to be a GP farm and run specialists.

But I am certainly no pro so that may not be the best idea ;-)

Mansa doesn't really declare war much, so it's probably better to be friends with the Aztecs before you steamroll him.

Mansa's handy to have around as he is a good techer, but keep an eye on him in case he techs too well.

I too would have settled where the blue circle is. I always settle my first settler in place and it's never done me wrong.

In terms of getting land - it's something I'm trying to learn because I hate warring - I just try to get as much land as I possibly can get at the start, build towards my neighbours and backfill later. My husband likes warring a lot more, so if he gets boxed in early, he just rushes his neighbours early. If I can't get at least 7-8 cities without being boxed in completely, that's the only time I'll DoW on someone early.

Blue circle was correct. Coastal, fresh water, 2 strong (6F) food resources, 3 gems. Still has 2 avaible hills for production.

Build worker first, make first tech agriculture, 2nd tech is fishing. Worker builds farm on corn first, then mines 3 gems. City builds worker, followed by warrior (or 2) then workboat when it can. Grow to size 5, start pumping out settlers/workers while working fish + corn + 3 gems. Thats 24 commerce from gems, 3 from fish, 9? from capital's base square = 36 commerce.

Looking at the map you are in danger of being boxed in. Go with an early war, preferably Monty as he in to unpredictable to keep that close.

I'm playing on warlord. Used to win on noble in warlords but trying BTS now so thought I'd give myself a chance to check out the new features.

wickedcherub: I have spread my religeon to Monte but Mansa already has another. Shaka and Hannibal are both the other side so will try and spread Buddism to them. That way Mansa should be in big trouble.

Hopefully here is the save you are after Ghpstage.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Esp Learningciv

A war with Monty is pretty much inevitable to happen sometime in the game. You financial and the start is very good commerce-wise. The best idea would probably be to get yourself to a tech advantage and DoW on Monty. The earlier the better because he will start pumping out tons of units as the game progresses and with the aggressive trait it will be hard to take him then. Tech to AH and/or BW and see if you can grab these resources first. Make sure to found a good early production city (which at this era will probably have to be which ever city you find the Horse/Iron near) so that you can get enough units up quickly before Monty gets axes/spears.

If you want advice on what city to settle, just post a screenshot after you have revealed one of the strategic resources. There's a small chance that none of them will be nearby. If this is the case, then you might need to try a different strategy.

I tried the 4000BC save. The start is really good for a financial civ so I was able to tech construction very early and invaded Mali with a small stack of swords, horsearchers, and hwachas in 400BC (see screenshot). A good production site was 2N of the Bananas on the river. I am planning to take out Monty soon after a capture the holy city of Buddhism (I let Monty found it so that there would be more religious hatred but it ended up that Mali didn't found Hinduism).

Thx for the advice Tibur. Think I will start again in a mo with all of the excellent tips I have received. Glad yer enjoying the save I posted.

Screw construction, i razed Timbuktu with warriors, then rebuilt it to be coastal. Then i axerushed monty and he's down to 1 minor city.
