This was what I posted in the "Installing civ4 on windows 7

"Hi there, this was very helpful, but it seems my problems have gone full circle.

I am using an older laptop with Windows 7 [sigh], and Civ4 vanilla. I do not have the expansions. I installed civ4 and had issues right away [because it was ver1.09], and the online solutions seemed to say get 1.74. My issue with installing 1.74 was I didnt have 1.61.

When I first attempted to run 1.09, after telling me this had known compatibility issues, the game would attempt to load and at "init engine" I would get an error about rendering graphics or so, with a bunch of parameters afterwards. It then shuts down

Since 1.74, I do not get the compatibility issues message, but the engine still will not initialize. I am sooo dissapointed and craving civ4, someone please help."

I havent had a response in a few days now and am hoping someone who knows whats going on simply skipped over it.

Try right clicking on the Civ icon and choosing "Run as Administrator". Windows 7 is fussy about folder privileges.

Let us know if that works, k? :)

"Initialize Renderer Failed" is the error i get when it gets to "Init Engine"

I did try that just now, unfortunately no it didnt work any differently. Im wondering if its simply the video or graphics card this laptop has.

Try updating your DirectX 9 package. That will cause rendering issues.

Well I just checked to make sure I had the latest version and it said it didnt need to be installed because I already did. I dont think I need to be putting it in a different area like I did when I installed civ4?

No, just let DirectX install where it wants to be put.

What folder did you put Civ4 into? Did you try Kiwitt's guide to installing on Win7/Vista? It's stickied at the top of this forum. I would suggest uninstalling and doing that, UNLESS you have a Steam version.

Yes I followed it, and thats how I managed to install the updates properly, which was an issue before.

Im having a feeling it simply isnt going to happen... :(

Try downloading DirectX and running again to see what happens.
