Help - what am I doing wrong?

Now then, I'm going to start off by saying the explanations need to be Layman's terms; I get confused enough downloading previous mods.

So, I've downloaded torrent, then the 2.92 version via torrent. It started 'seeding', but the estimated time was not given, and nothing seemed to be happening, so I assume that means it's done, even though it said '0 (40)' in the seeded category-thing.

It then appeared in my 'Downloads' folder, and I zipped the folder to 'C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Rise of Mankind'. I then uploaded the Mod in the advanced section, but there is no difference to the IV complete collection game. Any body know what I'm doing wrong?

You did mean Unzipped the Mod?

Look inside the Mod itself and see if you have a 2nd Rise of Mankind folder inside of it. If you do, cut the 2nd folder and paste into your \Beyond the Sword\Mods folder and then delete the 1st one. This is a common occurrence and will display the symptoms you are describing.
