Help with Alliances

I'm so confused - here's the scenario:
Turn 1-France declared war on me;
Turn 2-I got an alliance with India against France;
Turn 3-France got an alliance with England against me;
I got an alliance with the Iroquios against England;
I got an alliance with Russia against England;
Turn 4- France got an alliance with Russia against me;
Turn 5-I got an alliance with Iroquois against Russia;
Turn 6- India got an alliance with England against France.

So now the Iroquois are fighting the English yet, even though the English just switched allegences. My question is how can I get the Iroquios to stop fighting the English - and how would I switch other aliiances if I need too? (And are the English still at war with me?) Is switching alliances common among the AI civs?

Thanks for the help..

I see the alliance switching a lot, drives me nuts. Im always worried about my reputation, so I try to honor agreements and alliances. The AI on the other hand, doesnt seem to care. Ive seen civs declare war on a civ they just signed a peace treaty with the prior turn, and i've seen civs I just formed an alliance with jump ship a turn later.

I've gotten back-to-back messages from the advisor -
"England and Korea have signed a peace treaty" <enter>
"Korea has declared war on England"
I assume England demanded Korea get their troops out or declare war and Korea obliged. No, the AI's aren't too worried about their reputation.
I usually try to avoid MA's unless I really need one in the worst way. The AI's aren't always real conscientious about doing much fighting after they sign one and (if I care about my rep) I have to stay at war for 20 turns which may not suit my plans.

My read on the AI declaring war immediately after making peace is that the other civ just attacked someone with whom the AI had an MPP.

I would help, but about halfway through your first post RudeDog, I went cross-eyed. :(

You've got a nice world war.

You cannot get the Iroquios and English to make peace. They must find out by themselves that they should stop fighting.

The AI don't seem to look at the big picture. It only looks at one civ at a time when deciding whether it wants the civ as an ally or enemy - unlike you, it sees lots of independant wars, and not one big world war with two sides.

Generally, the only way to switch alliances is by starting new wars. If two civs has an alliance against a third civ and you want to stop them from attacking this civ, then get one of them to attack the other, which will break those two civs' MA against the third. They will not automatically stop fighting the third civ, but the chance is higher since the MA is broken.

And no, the English is no longer at war with you. You cannot make a MA (or any other deal) with England while at war. But this is easily checked in the diplo screen...

Thanks everyone..

Oh well, as long as the others are fighting 'someone', I guess thats a good thing :)

I have a common border with only France and Russia and it's still early in the game (best unit so far is a knight). that's why I looked for alliances. Otherwise the AI civs give a RoP to those who can't reach me. BTW, my allies are doing a fair amount for me - France's troops just turned south where India is attacking them, leaving an easy path to their northern cities :)

Again, thanks for the replies..
