Help with patches & fresh install of Civ iii

Hi thanks for taking the trouble to read this.

I own the uk version of CivII and stopped playing a while ago when the last expansion pack came out (Conquests?) - the one which had the bugged Forbidden Palace and other nasties.

Reason for quitting was there didn't seem to be a patch to fix these issues (Firaxis did the US but not the European!) Looking at the patches section here there it looks like I can now patch?)

In the meantime, I have also changed computers - so its a fresh install.

Do I install in order and patch? Or not?

I.e. do I do

install civ iii (patch 1.22 all languages)

install ptw (patch uk v1.27f)

install conquest (1.22 all languages?)

Or do I install civ iii, install ptw, install conquests and then just install the latest conquest patch (patch 1.22 all languages)?

The way to go is:

Install 'Vanilla' Civ3. Patching is not necessary.

Install Civ3:Conquests. Once it's installed, patch to 1.22, found here.

Installing PTW is not necessary, unless you are playing a mod that is dependant on the extra units included in PTW. Mods like Rise & Rule.... In that case, install PTW after installing Vanilla. Again, patching is not necessary. Do this before installing Conquests.

"Why," you ask, "is patching not necessary?" I'm glad you asked. When you install the expansion packs, it automatically checks for patch level. If you're playing an unpatched version, the expansion installation will automatically patch to the highest level. So you could patch, if you really wanted to, but it's not necessary.

Again, installing PTW is not needed unless you need the extra units installed with the game. Keep in mind that PTW is included in Conquests.

Thanks very much for the reply - I (vaguely) recalled some controvery/problems concerning installing PTW onto a non-patched Civ iii and so wanted to be sure.

I forgot that Conquest has PTW (I bought all three seprately as they came out so never really noticed).

So just to check my understanding - when I install Conquests I also install (as a part of it) what was formerly the stand alone PTW.

I only need to install from the individual PTW disc to get a few extra unit files (presumeably as they aren't in the Conquest version of PTW). I only need the extra files if I want to play some mods (which I doubt). If I do install it do it before conquests and don't patch it

Yup, that's pretty much right. You can patch, if you want, but you don't need to. Until you get to Conquests and need to patch to 1.22.
