Can someone tell me how I can make my cities happy again. I started off the game with my 3 cities I built it was no problem but after I took over some cities states and another nation the unhappiness is like 20. Im not quiet sure how I can build a courthouse or something in these settlements seeing as it would take 130 turns...

Raze the bad ones or build Colosseum everywhere

Sell some of your newly captured cities to a distant AI for lots of gold AND / OR lots of hapiness resources.

Also in future never immeaditely annex captured cities. Make them puppets first then annex them only if you really need them after some time has passed.

I tend to sell most of the cities i conquer.

Freshly conquered cities can be left as puppet states for a while unless there is a pressing reason to annex them. Let the puppets rebuild their population so that when you eventually annex them they will have better production and will be able to build their courthouses faster.

Also, if you have a strong economy you can afford to rush-build coliseums and theaters whenever your happiness drops below a certain threshold.

Do you have to have a certain policy active to rush construction? Sorry for the noob question.

If you sell cities don't sell them to the best Civs.

Only rush buy theaters if there are no more Colosseum to buy.
They got a better upkeep/happy rate.

It takes time to build courthouses which is why it's often better to raze a city when you take it than to annex it, have a settler with your army instead and build a new one. This way you'll not get the unhappiness issues from annexing a city, on the downside you may loose any improvements and population already gathered in the city.

So, it's a bit situational, a city with wonders and alot of standing buildings in it may be worth keeping even though a courthouse may take forever to build.

No particular policy. I just tend to prioritize gold over production in most of my cities so I usually have the surplus ready for such rush buys.

I prefer not to lose to accrued borders that a conquered city will have. Sure you can buy the tiles, but if you can afford to do that you can certainly afford the maintenance cost of a courthouse.

Besides, I prefer to use settlers to settle an unclaimed frontier. The more cities you have, the better your economy should be. Of course, I tend to build a fair amount of cities and a strong economy before I set out on my conquests. Those who set off from a smaller base will not have the economic weight to absorb new cities as readily.

In CIV5 it's very difficult to expand your expire and then fix it up afterwards. You need to get a stable base and expand without breaking it. Policies are part of this since once you've got a policy its benefits will scale up as your empire expands. City State allies are a good way of getting happiness if you have the cash since they provide you with their resources.

Only capture the cities you want and leave the bad ones behind or raze them.

So pretty much I choose either to not control my settlement or trade it away.

no , thats nonsense . You can easily control loads of cities .

Puppet them till they start building stuff you dont want them to , then annex them . Of course you cant control every city but if you work on it you can have alot of happiness and alot of cities .

You should have access to the colliseum before you consider expanding beyond 2 or 3 cities. Unhappy people absolutely cripple growth and production. This was probably placed in a separate tech branch to counter stonehenge/great library or unit/military rushes.

The Piety policy that grants you happiness for unmanned cities is a VERY nice fix, although I do not necessarily understand the mechanic behind it. The garrisoned city policy is a nice one as well.
