I've played the game about 10 times, usually on Chieftain or Warlord. I've downloaded all 3 of the patches.

Can someone please tell me why my city governors continue to recommend building swordsman, longbowmen, ironclads, etc. well into the Modern Age? These are outdated units! It's amazingly frustrating!

Is it the level I'm playing, or something else I'm forgetting about??

About all you can do is order your governor to focus on city improvements. It is a pain in the butt, but you have to be careful about what your cities produce. (Heck, I had a governor trying to build swordsmen while I was working on my spaceship! Hahaha.)

The biggest solution to your problem is to edit your civilization so the governor will never build 'em, and to pay closer attention to what your governors are making.

If you make the units so they can be upgraded to more modern units, they'll disappear. For example, if you make swordsman upgradable to rifleman, the swordsman will disappear from the build menu when you get the ability to build riflemen.

I was under the impression that swordsman could not be upgraded. What is needed to upgrade that unit?

A better option than editing the game is simply to turn off the governors in the preferences menu and turn on "always build another of same unit." I refuse to use the governors even in large games where I have hundreds of cities, simply because they will waste production on silly things.

On the units page in the editor, select the unit you want (in this case swordsman) and there is an "upgrade to:" section where you can choose what unit it upgrades to (for example, rifleman). Also, under "special actions," check "upgrade unit" and you'll be able to upgrade it in the game. This not only removes it from the build menu when you get rifleman (or whatever you chose to upgrade it to), but it also allows you to upgrade any existing swordsman you may have left over (if your city has barracks, required resources, etc.).
