I try to start the game, but it stops and has error messages when it begins to load XML. I tapered with the files a bit (before I knew there were mods) can ANYONE help me??

Hello, welcome 
If you have messed with the XML files then, unless you know exactly what you did, and can reverse it, I recommend that you reinstall the game software.
For future reference you should *always* make a backup of any file before you try to change it, so that you can put it back the way it was. FWIW, I always keep a complete, untouched copy of my Civ4 software folder in its latest working state. This is essential for me, in order that I can produce Game of the Month start files locked to a standard set of assets.

Wow! The game started working again! Sure is going to be the last time I tamper with the XML
