Heroic Epic/Generals/Armies Questions

I admit that I have the worst RNG luck of anyone I know but I just find that elites are a bunch of pansies. They die faster than those stupid Egyptian war chariots. I have had an elite cav (full strength) lose to a red-lined reg spear. Elites just cannot seem to win for me that often.

I finally gave up and made HE available to build with Literature and it produces a leader for me. I can literally go for 5 or 6 games and never get a leader from an elite. (should they live) I most often win by domination or at least own my continent so it is not that I don't fight often.

I am glad that my suggestion is working well for you, Darski. I went that route for the same reason, I never could get a leader. However, I normally do not fight a lot and I do play on Huge or larger maps, with a limited number of opponents. Therefore, I really had a low chance of getting a Leader through the promotion of an Elite, as I had so few Elite units.

Yours was the best suggestion I have had for game play.:goodjob:

and you may recall that I had complained that I could not build HE in my capitol. Well that got fixed when I did a reinstall.

Appreciate your help on this one.

It might ... I know I'm always wondering at how you people can manage to get so many leaders (like darski, I tend to not get many/any/RNG-godsawful-luck), but I do play on Huge maps, which I don't think is the norm.

Actually, on huge maps, leaders are more likely due to more combat and wars. Looking at Vmxa's example, you can see he wars A LOT. At lower levels with fewer AI combat units leaders are less common.

Also, try to pick easy prey for you're elite battles, bombard them down to 1hp if possible.

ha, I just re-learned this technique after not playing cIII in 5 years. It's funny, I used to be a peacenik wussie, now that I've played civ5 I just try to kill everything in sight. definitely makes the game play differently than I used to play it, time for me to up the difficulty level again...

Ok... been waiting 7 years...

When do you think it might change?

thank you for helping my odds, I just got an MGL on my 7th or 8th elite battle in my current game (right as I got into feudalism). HE is great, does anybody know what the % chance increase it gives to form MGL's?

I've been on the dark side for so long, I don't remember how to be a peacenik. AI demands for resource trades get so ridiculous it's just easier to kill them and take the blasted resources. I think most people find war works best and easiest for winning.

I know Spoonwood has done some very peaceful games at high levels. I'm not sure how he gets away with it.

I'm actually very peaceful and easygoing in real life. Civ 3 lets me get my aggressions out.

Hmmm, I am just the reverse, is some respect. My consulting for the government is generally anything but peaceful, but I am not a fan of wars in Civ3, one reason being that they take so much time to fight. However, I have found that an army of my modified Crusaders or Swiss Pikeman is a great way to get rid of irritating AI civilizations.

For a peaceful game, rights of passage can help since it improves attitude. VMXA pointed out in another thread that gifting them your initial gold/early stash (I haven't done this, but it's a thought) may prevent them from attacking you early. Build embassies. Turning the aggression level all the way up might help as it may increase the probability of the AIs attacking each other before they come after you. Turning it all the way down may also help since then they don't dislike you so much when you meet them. Also, don't get stingy with trading them tech, resources, or luxuries. Heck, if you have iron before the industrial age give away your only resource (I've only done this when I've needed techs, but it's a thought) it might be a good idea to set some builds to swords/medieval infantry/knitghts and then give it away. What do you need for in a peaceful game other than for factories? Giving away your horses is another thought. Train offensive units since you look stronger that way.

Map size doesn't affect leader probability. Do bear in mind that while you can get leaders on defense, the probablities are halved (I think). Also, if you happen to have an SGL hanging out, you'll never get an MGL.

But I've gotten leaders with a warrior Elite win in like 2500 BC. And I've had games where I was at constant war and didn't get a leader till the mid AD's.

interesting info.

found out something that I didn't know earlier: the extra income from ancient great wonders isn't just money, it's actual trade income just like any other. up to +14 per wonder for potentially several wonders is fantastic!
