Hey everyone! I just got into playing civilization, and i have a few questions.

Playing on the earth map, in North america there's a forked river. I put a city between the forks but i couldn't build any sea units. Is this because i am on a river? Do i need to be on the coast to builg battleships and the like?

Also, a friend told me that before you build your first city, you should irrigate/mine/build roads/etc. all the squares around your city so you will have more food/shields/trade right away. I thought that it would just slow me down, and it would be better to build a city first. What do you guys think?

thanks for the help!

Ships can't sail on Civ rivers so they'd have nowhere to go!

There are times when it's important to road/irrigate SOME of the squares around a city site before you build the city (never all). This is when you are colonising a small remote island with space for only one city, with poor terrain, where you won't get help from other settlers and if you don't do the work ahead of time the city won't grow fast enough. However these times are the exception and you should normally build the city first.

Okay, thanks a lot.

Also, how can you make screenshots of Civ1 while you're playing?

Okay thanks.

What's the point of future tech? Just to get a higher score at the end?

Yes that's right it's just for extra points!
I thought 6 years ago that " how many of these do I still need?!?!?! )

How long did it take you guys to get good?

I've been playing for about 2 weeks and a still haven't won on cheiftan!

Why would you want to make screenshots from civ1 its **** and so are all of you. Secondly, it took me two hours to get good at civ1 its just ****.

Don't worry. I've been playing as long as I have had a good enough computer. I think that is around 7 years. And still it's hard for me to win cheiftain

Luck is not entirely absent. As for level, the higher the more the PC cheats, it doesn't get smarter, so who cares?

I've been playing almost ten years and I'm not sure if I'm good or not.

after ten games on Chieftain-level I was good in it. you just have to figure out how the game is working, try to use the Civiopidea

I'd say that after a couple of years and a couple of years without playing and now that I've been playing a couple of months I'd say I quite good at chieftan. But I can't make it at all on King or Emperor:nuke:
