How do you highlight the grid squares that are in your territory (i.e. within the city radius of one or more of your cities) in standard civII?

IIRC, it is an option under the view menu called show map grid.

Once you build a city, the area that the city covers will have white grids, while the rest of the map will have black grids.

I think in some of the earliest versions of civ2 classic the city grid is black so make sure you have the 2.42 patch from the downloads section.

Ctrl-G is the quick way to switch On / Off the grid.

I've downloaded the version 2.42 upgrade patch, but I could not run the civ2.exe application. When I try to open it the reply is "smedsnet.dll not found".

You must have a very early version of Civ 2 indeed. You can grab the smedsnet.dll from the downloads section of my site which is linked in my sig.

I don't think that can be the problem, since all Civ2 versions have the smedsnet.dll.

What exactly did you do with the patch? What you SHOULD do is unzip it into your main civ2 directory and let it overwrite any existing files.
