A simple question: What is the highest level of experience you've ever been able to nurse a unit up to?

Myself: taking a Praetorian and applying your first few Great Generals got me a level 11 unit; be sure to get the Leadership promotion to accelerate leveling as well as maximizing your Withdraw percentage to increase your survival odds.

It helps if you single out a backwards Civ without metals and mob it throughout the game; essentially warring not to conquer cities or reach any military objectives, but warring to maximize the experience level of your favorite unit!

I believe I got a level 10 Infantry who had survived since my very first war when he was a swordsman. I'm not sure. I remember that after he became a rifleman I kept sending him in first because I didn't care much if he died as he had promotions like Shock and Cover that were obsolete. He was just a statistical anomaly and kept winning; you get a lot of XP for low odds victories and it kind of steamrolled.

I'm just talking about BtS. I also play the Fall From Heaven mod and units get very high level in that game. Some units, called "Heroes," gain 1 XP per turn until they have 100 (1 xp shy of level 10 if you aren't charismatic).

Also, I don't think this belongs in Strategy & Tips.

I think I got two full columns of promotions on the interface on a warlord-led-Jumbo-turned-Cavalry in a multiplayer game. He had 85ish xp and I was playing a Charismatic leader (Hannibal). IIRC he had Combat 6 and Medic 3 and some other random promos

I've had a 280something xp Mech Infantry (Axe->GG->Mace->Rifle->Infantry->Mech Infantry) on a Charismatic leader. Wish I had a screenie because it sounds so ridiculous, but then again I've passed the 200 xp mark several times. Always War for example makes ridiculous Longbows->Rifles->etc.

And yea, you can have all the promos possible. Combat VI, Drill IV, G III, WM III, Leadership, Tactics, Morale, CR III, March makes for a unit that's just as overpowered as you'd think.

There was, a while back, a custom map deity, one city challenge, always war game (it featured a chokepoint of one forested hill that the player defended the entire game). I think he had three units that completed the promotion tree by the end of the game.

Yeah, that would be this map.

Here's a pic of one of his units:

That map is a total blast :D I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who hasn't had a go. My top guy was Leonidas and he was killing like 10 attackers himself virtually every turn for a while, without taking a scratch. You can easily get all the promotions in each era, then occasionally a new one becomes available as the elite units are upgraded.

Forest, hill, fort, I can't remember if it was over a river or not. Then add 2 first strikes for Samurai - very satisfying in a brainless sort of way to sit and watch the AIs throw themselves up against the "thin red line". That was the easy part though - sad to say I never managed to break out enough to win by conquest.

Must be due another try I think - it's over 2 years ago now

I regularly get 300-400xp on a unit and I've had over 1000xp a handful of times. Five things help rack up the xp. Charismatic leaders, Imperialistic leaders, Warlord led units with the leadership promotion, raging barbarians, and big maps.

You can also try the "Defense" scenario of BtS, also allows you to get some really high promoted units :) be sure not to run them into the suicide grenadiers however...
