I was thinking, with the "fire" version overhauling a bunch of diplomacy things for the game, why not tinker with Hippus?

I was thinking something along the lines of it being really easy to bribe the nation into joining wars with you, or if you're playing Hippus, have the AI to try (often) to buy you off to help them out. (keyword there is "often.")

Maybe even code a way so that the negative modifier "You declared war on us!" doesn't apply to Hippus, because hey, it's Hippus. They're always getting paid to stab things.

Maybe even take away their positive modifier of the "We like you because you are helping us in a war" (??? Maybe?)

By "bribing them easily" I don't necessarily mean it won't cost much, just that they'll more often or not accept a large amount of money to go bust some heads. You know what I mean.

I hope this wasn't already suggested or implemented already and I look like a complete douche for bringing it up again.

I DO like this idea.

I worry about diplomacy becoming stuck though. This doesnt strike me as scripting is "dictating" the diplomacy, but we should be careful about such ideas in teh future, because it'll start making the games all look alike, and people will always expect the same behavior from every civ. Some civs SHOULD behave consistantly, (Hyborem, I'm looking at you) but others should be more adaptive and prone to unpredictability.

Frankly I think this idea is great - because its not forcing anything, just allowing a different set of options and criteria - and affecting influence, not descisions. It would also allow any player to plays hippus enjoy the combat of the game more, without overly permanent consequences from other civs. You could declare war on, or be hired by anyone. I like it.

The little I have read on the Hippus suggests, to me at least, that they are not quite the mercenaries that they offer as a front to their activities.

But beyond psychoanalyzing a fictional group of individuals about which there is very little to use as reference material... I find it odd that the OP would end the initial post with "I hope this hasn't already been implemented"...

As for the merits of the Diplomacy - I think that it is a pretty good one. :)

I think it was a miscommunicated attempt to explain embarrasment for requesting something that may be in fact a moot point. The attempt was not one of truly wishing that what he wants wont happen - which I agree would be counter-productive and counter-intuative. However, if he wishes to express his potential regret for rehasing an old request that may have already been considered, or indeed, implemented, then it was done so at a cost to clairty.

:P just havin' fun.

Ummm... Yes. What you said.

I found this on the Fall from Heaven mod page...
"Desc: Warriors for hire, the swift moving Hippus have fought for every nation at one time or another. They are equally happy partnered with orcs as they are with men as long as they pay."
Sounds pretty merc to me.

The stories relating to the Hippus on the Wiki page lead me to believe that they hire out as mercs as a means of turning the other factions against each other. All other factions encroached upon them, leading the Hippus to war against each other - then they realize what's going on, so they decide to become mercs so that the other factions quit encroaching upon them and instead pay them.

If we're talking ways to make the diplomacy of different empires more unique and flavourful, how about giving the Grigori (and probably other agnostic civs) a positive modifier for people with no state religion... "you don't worship false gods" or somesuch.

I just noticed for the first time today that Os-Gabella hates me because I am just a man. I quite liked that, though I'm not sure of the reason for it.

Well Os-Gabella is the first woman the angels created and she had some serious problems with her husband...

If you were Falamar, she'd fancy the pants off you.

I was thinking of just making Hippus having a disposition to accepting bribes to join wars, but these ideas are cool too. I guess.

"you don't worship false gods".
QUOTE]

The leader of the Grigori IS a god. :) one who threw away his claim to Godliness due to the horrors which are committed in the Name of religeon. or something like that.

But I can certainly see justification to adding a positive Dipomacy modifier for having no state religeon.

Actually, he was a subordinate angel under Dagda, the Angel of Balance. Technically, there is only one God, the One, and the others (Junil, Agares and the whole party) are only Angels, even if they have the powers of gods.

ahh, that makes sense. My background isn't great, but I read a few of the stories and found them pretty cool.

Yea, FfH backstory is great, I think I spend more time reading/thinking about it than actually playing the game lol

The first thing that I modded in FFH (actually, it was the thing in Default CIV IV that I came to the board to mod - and I found that FFH did the same thing) was the Open Borders request variables.. and when I started modding it for FFH - I read all of the stories on the Wiki so that I could get as good of a sense of each of the leaders as I could so that I could be fairly confident in how I was changing some of their leader specs... The only backstory which I was disappointed in was Perpentach's - probably because he is my favorite leader to use, I had hoped for something dealing with his origin - but no such luck.... but atleast a lot of the other stories featured him so there was no shortage of information to pull from to determine how I wanted his settings to be.

Yeah, I wrote a brief blub on each leader just to let the team get a feel for them back when we first started FfH2. Perpentach is one fo the few that still has that blurb in place. We definitly need to get him a real story.
