I think he means that Carthage was more interested in coastal Africa than they were in the Sahara, even though they bordered the Sahara. This is natural, since until the 20th century it was very difficult and expensive to support anything more than a nomadic lifestyle in the desert.

Probably westwards/southwest into Morroco and Mauritania, but since I don't know what Numidia was doing around that time, it's possible they were hoping to expand east as well.

Carthage should also covet Egypt ... everyone else did during that period.

Actually as far as I know at that time egypt had just seporated from alexanders empire and was very messed up with internal affairs, the main powers were carthage and the greaks, and carthage was by far the richer...
