Hmm.. Trade routes?

Like for example, I currently have eight trade routes, and I annihilated the Greece which also had eight Trade routes. Why can't i just add his trade routes to my total? o.o

Gameplay wise: Balance
Realism wise: Because your bureaucracy and your merchants cannot manage/maintain more than 8 trade routes effectively.
