HNDY05c - Always War Sid – Play your way onto the GOMOAW team!

Couldn't find the time to generate a start, but wouldn't Byzantium make an outstandig Civ for AWS?
SCI -> Start with BW, lots of research needed
SEA -> Start with Alphabet, Literature one tech nearer, only city square bonus not affected by Despotism penalty
Dromon -> Isn't it better to sink a Caravel easily, then have to kill 3 Muskets? No resources, can help bombarding, will keep its usefulness throughout the whole game, and still you can somewhat decide when to trigger the GA...
Guess I'll have to try it some time ;)

You know, Doc maybe right... in the Race Wars 2 game we're playing AWM with tbe Byz on a PANGEA maybe, and we're stomping over there. I think everyone will aggree that it's probably the easiest and smoothest rolling AW game ever. What saved us was the Science asspect, and being the first to techs and getting 2 sci leaders... Starting with Alpha will make sure you got the GL like we did.;)

This is tough. I like and even admire the players who submitted games, and I like several of the games. I hope no one gets too upset if their game is not a top vote getter. Eventually I’d like to play all of the games [except Babylon.. ]
T_McC, Greebley & others did a nice job of dissecting the games, I won’t add anything there and just cut to the chase with my votes:

Sir Bugsy – Celts
I have a soft spot here for the Celts, and love the UU. They were my first solo AWM win, and I haven’t played them in a while. We’ll need iron to win, but you can say that about any AWS game. No iron on your continent, you’re toast.

SesnOfWthr – Iroquois
I placed this game second. One condition is I don’t have to type SesnOfWthr, and can use a nickname like “Sesn” or “SOW”. ;)
I’ve never played as the Iroquois, I like purple and I’m 1/256th Indian (so they tell me).
I’m up for playing these two at the same time, then coming back for the other games as we finish HNDY05b, c, and d.

I’m up for starting two of these if the rest of GOMOAW are

Thanks for all who participated! I mean it!

So far, the votes are:
Handy: 1. Celts 2. Iroquois
YOM: 1. Iroquois 2.Celts
T_McC: 1. Iroquois 2.Celts

Greebley:

Well I guess my picks are (1) Iros and (2) Celts. No problem with starting two at once, especially once the train wreck that is SGOTM3 ends.

I would encourage all who posted to join grs in playing the Roman start, or any others we don't pick. And don't be afraid to pipe in that you want to play in one of the games we pick. Nothing in the rule book says all the GOMAW have to play in any one game. (I firmly believe our Sumerian game is a win. :) )

Well, I guessed mine would be 3rd at best (as it looks now) - I would have chosen the other two, too. I will start "grs3 - the roman legions go aws" anyways in some days and would be happy to see any daring players, who participated in this thread one way or another, join it.

To be true sid is above my level and so - although I'd be very interested in the celtic game - I see no good reason to spoil it for other players by shouting "let me in". This is another case for what game I ever start and I always get an extra 10% with the romans ;)

My votes are for the celts and Iroqois as well. The Celts looks like the tougher of the two, but still an interesting situation. I have less confidence than TMcC that a gallic Army is an auto-win - it would give us a decent shot though.

Two more good entries, but I still think the Iroquois are a bit better off.

In Cuivienen's start the I am guessing the island is too small to support enough cities to win.

I think you should try the Roman start Grs. Even if it is a loss the game can teach you things (like how fast the SID AI can grow and how to fight a defensive war).

Im in for a grs game if we have a quality team and I can play on weekends only.
Sorry for all the rules but my time is getting limited.
It's football season and I am a coach/advance scout/spy for our college so my playing time really fluctuates. Plus nobody can know what I look like. Hehe

I'm sure my daughter will be thrilled to find out that now I'm a Grumpy Old Man. After we have her first driving lesson this evening I'm sure she'll agree completely.

Handy, please slot me in just one of the games. This summer is proving to be really busy and I have fallen behind the past 2 weekends in a row and with football right around the corner it doesn't look to improve. I have no preference on either start. I think they both need things to happen and a bit of luck to succeed.

:( Nobody commented on my suggestion on an AWS Zulu game. Don't worry, I'm not allergic to criticism (or compliments, for that matter :D).

Isn't anyone interested?

Zany Zulu,

Sorry, I missed that entirely on my read thru.

I would be willing to play, though it would be easier for me timewise if we waited for Handy5b to complete. We will now have 3 tiny games.

For a standard map, I wouldn't want to try higher than demigod.
A small I could be convinced to try diety, but I think demigod would be better to try first.

lurker's comment: About the Zulu game: I think that if you are playing with the rule that a civ has to actually show up on the diplomacy screen (usually by offering a deal) for you to declare war, then you can use the expansionist trait to contact civs, but not have to declare war if you keep science so high that you have absolutely nothing to trade away. Therefore you would get lower tech prices, as well as getting to decide when you go to war, and with whom.

EDIT: I see you are playing with the stricter version of the variant.

I would be up for it, but with these two new ones started we'll have three AWS games going. I'd prefer to wait for HNDY05b to complete first. If you're anxious to begin Yom01 go ahead, but 3 SG's is pretty much my limit these days. [Actually I'm in 4 now, but SGOTM3 does not look long too terribly promising].

Just for torture, I started a game with these rules with a random civ and got the zulu. I'll let you look at the start and see if you're interested in it. I think it was a fairly good start as I'm still alive in about 1500 bc. If you choose it, I'll be interested to lurk your thread too.

I tried a number of starts and all the good ones were less than 10 tiles away from an enemy. The rest were all isolated island starts with no fresh water.

Well, Ivory is always a good thing in AW. :D

To alleviate playing starts that have no chance of winning you could have someone (like myself) check the starts with "rings" to insure that they have iron or horses somewhat close. Then report back giving no spoiler info.
