HNDY09 Wonderless XAWM with additional restrictions

1250 bc

Ideas:
Green dots are a just a thought as an idea to squeeze in 2 fishing villages for unit support purposes. Probably build harbor & workers in these. Maybe occasional cat.
Red dot is a river and places an ivory behind the lines.
Blue dot is just to expand borders and protect ivory.
Black dot is another way to shield ivory, but the site is exposed to 2 mountains where AI can atack from. I don't like the black one very much.
Orange dot shields Oporto’s right flank from invasion.
Purple dot is thousands of years in the future. AI may settle near here first.
I expect new chinese towns near the dyes soon. That's where their troops came from.

Two swords armies, three new cities and one AI eliminated. We don't ask too much. :D

How about one sword lost, one new city, and more frequent visits from our neighbors? That about sums up my turns

Don't really see the need to make any changes here.

1225 BC (1) - Learn Philosophy and take Polytheism, start Monarchy. Lisbon builds spearman, starts settler.

1175 BC (3) - Rather disappointing. Lost a sword (4/4) to an archer (3/4) on hill outside Ferro. Then lose archer (4/4) to archer (2/3). Not doing much for kill ratio. Finally manage to kill one of them.

1100 BC (6) - Uh oh. Immortals approaching.

1050 BC (8) - Immortals outside Ferro. Cats go 0/3. Well, at least they're regular and at least the walls finished. And Map Making is known. There is a barb galley, so someone knows Map Making (I assume it would be improper to check which techs are known).

IT - On defense, cats do nothing. And regular immortals, attacking a walled town across a river, kill a vet spear.

1025 BC (9) - Catapult finally succeeds and redlines the remaining Immortal. Coimbra founded by game, begins catapult.

1000 BC (10) - Ferro is recieving lots of attention. Catapults do their job, and should hopefully deter attack for now.

Notice the archer is alone defending the iron. We lost three units, one of each that we can build at this point, up at Ferro so it is thinly defended. Lisbon might be changed to spearman, but at size 6 building a spear wastes a lot of shields.

(I assume it would be improper to check which techs are known).

This is allowed. We can spy using F4.

Looks like we need to abandon Ferro and Lisbon's settler should go settle on top of the iron. Vet Immortals are sure to show up soon. The Iron will be easier to defend that way, and in the long run we will probably save shields since we will lose less on defense. If the Celts have iron also we are definitly going to need defensive bonus. Gallics can retreat so they will recycle into big stacks. Yeah, let's do it. make sure the settler is in place before we abandon.

So, what can we rush in Ferro before we abandon it?

With no horses, if we lose the iron we are in deep trouble.

preturn: switch Ferro to high shield and build a worker in 4 turns for preparation of resettling.

I move an archer out to kill the redlined immortal. Since there are no other units around, it might work.

IBT 3 Celtic archers show up to north of Sagres. Our archer on iron is attacked by an archer but it holds without a scratch. Redlined immortal attacks our archer and loses. [2-0]

975BC: Our archer can kill another redlined immortal but there is a 2hp archer next to it, so I fortify the archer to hope the immortal would attack us and lose.

Hire one scientist in Lisbon for this turn.

IBT another redlined immortal attacks our archer and promotes it. [3-0]

950BC:

IBT the 3 archers lose to our spearman and promote it. [6-0]

875BC: Abandon Ferro and refound New Ferro.

825BC: Monarchy in, revolt and draw 2 turns anarchy. Onky by hiring 2 scientists Lit is in 30 turns - Monarch techs are cheap!

775BC: Kill 2 Persian archers. [8-0]

IBT we are Monarchy. Two Chinese horsemen come in.

750BC: Due to the anarchy we'll build settler in 3 but grow to size 7 in 2, so I hire a scientist to make both in 3.

We should rush the walls in New Ferro when we have the gold.

I forgot to raise sci, so do it. I set to Literature because we need libraries. Do we go for Great Library?

Preflight check: MM Oporto off grass and onto roaded mined BG. Also off forest and onto river grass so we can get +2fpt and +6spt.
We can shave 4T off Lit by raising research to 50%.
MM Sagres off tobacco and onto river forest to get walls in 2T vs 4T.
Since the AI is going after the iron, move the elite spear out of Sagres and toward New Ferro.

IBT: @New Ferro: ¼ horse retreats, vet Chinese horse attacks and loses without scratching the spear.
Barbs close in from the West towards Grahamville (how cheesy :D )
Oporto spear -> spear, MM off grass and onto forest

T1: 730BC Bombard a couple of barbs. We are going to be really happy when we get engineering.
Everyone up CoL and MM

IBT: Guillaraes cat -> cat, Sagres walls -> barracks; Coimbra cat -> cat

T2: 710BC cat and sword move to Grahamville due to increased barb activity.

IBT: Lisbon settler -> settler

T3: 690BC Sword steps out of Grahamville, hoping to level up vs barbs.

IBT: Sword defends against only 1 barb (3/4); Oporto spear -> sword (MM for growth); reg Chinese horse appears on Mountain NW of New Ferro.

T4: 670BC Settler/spear pair heads to location SE of Sagres

IBT: Barb horse beelines for our worker; Chinese horse goes barb hunting.

T5: 650BC Workers in position to fix the settler pump but won’t finish for this cycle. Throttle back research to 30%, extra citizen in Lisbon becomes a tax collector.
Bombard offending barb horse and kill it with sword (3/4).

IBT: Chinese horse changes direction and attacks our sword, but we defend and gain an elite.
2 immortals appear near New Ferro (on mountain) Celts move a warrior and archer in from the NE.
Hurry the walls in New Ferro of 16g

IBT: Lit -> CoL (4t @ -1gpt); New Ferro walls -> barracks; Grahamville spear -> archer

T6: 630BC Settler pump is now fixed and will work in 4T vs 5T. Evora founded -> walls. I have to rotate a spearman out of Oporto to cover Evora, which forces me to raise the luxtax to 30%

IBT: Lisbon settler -> settler; Guillermaes cat -> cat

T7: 610BC Cats go 1 for 3 on the immortals outside of Guillermaes and 1 for 1 outside of Sagres
@ Guimareas: swordsman redlines but kills immortal.
Rotate an archer up to help Sagres but rivers halt progress.
Redline an archer outside of New Ferro on mountain. Kill it with the elite spear but no leader (4/5)

T8: 590BC

IBT: @ Sagres: defend against 2 archers and a warrior (celts). They have a horseman in range but it is frozen for some reason. Wounded immortal retreats.
Oporto sword -> sword; Coimbria cat -> cat

T9: 570BC Redline retreating immortal with cats and attack with elite sword, no leader

T10: 550BC MM between Lisbon and Oporto to get settler in 2T. Take a hp of an offending celtic warrior near Sagres.

Grahamville may be better off with walls instead of an archer, next player can change if desired.
Celts are starting to buildup in the NE.
Settler is in position for another town. Settler pump works now, but we may be better off getting Lisbon up to 10spt and pumping out swords instead of settlers now.

Left the cat’s active incase next player wants to rotate them

CoL due in 1T.

Settler is in position for another town. Settler pump works now, but we may be better off getting Lisbon up to 10spt and pumping out swords instead of settlers now.

This is a good idea. We can occasionally kick out a settler. Eight cities allows for 2 armies which usually means victory on a tinymap. It is okay to continue to settle, just make sure you can defend anything you settle.

Sir Bugsy is up

I'm out T,W,T this week but back Friday, so skip when I come up and keep the game rolling.

Six swords and 5 cats is a good enough stack to on offense with. You can attack and raze size 6 cities & less with this force until pikes appear. Avoid size 7. We can get size 7+ those with a sword army.

When we clear some land the Ai will switch to building settlers :rolleyes: while we will be building more swords. :goodjob:

OK, the settling expert has got it. I have to say I really like having at least one city producing settlers during AW. It doesn't have to be Lisbon, but we should do it somewhere.

I will take the full 48 on this one.

Pre-flight - 550 BC - Fortify the cats in there respective cities. I think G-man has them nicely distributed. Check F4, we're at war with everyone we know. That's good. CoL is due next turn, sliders don't need adjusting. Find that Guimarães can be MMed to get a three turn cat. With some growth it can be a two turn cat machine.

We are average compared to the Persians, and strong compared to the Chinese and the Celts. All three are still despots.

IBT - Three Celts move towards us. Three Chinese approach from the northwest.
COL=>MM (due in 6 at +2gpt) Stay in keeping with the cheapest tech concept.
Guimarães: cat=>cat

1. 530 BC - Kills: Celt archer
Change Coimbra to a spear to escort our settler. Found Braga on the coast. Start a worker.

IBT - The Celts want to talk. Find out that they are up MM and Construction.
Retreat a Celt horse and a Chinese Horse.
Lisboa: settler=>settler Going on the old adage that population is power, I keep the pump going.
G-manville: archer=>archer

2. 510 BC - Kills: 2 Chinese horses, Celt archer
I plan on using the settler 2NE-E of Sagres to anchor a consolidated front on the coast. We will then be able to backfill NE of where the barb camp is.

I bump science up 10% for a turn or two. Adjust the settler pump. (4-0)

IBT - Mao wants to talk. He's also up MM and construction.
Two vet immortals approach New Ferro

3. 490 BC - Kills: Chinese horse (5-0)
Mess with the sliders.

IBT - The immortals head for Guimarães
Oporto: sword=>sword
Guimarães: cat=>cat

4. 470 BC - Kills: Celt archer (6-0)
Evora will be attacked next turn.

IBT - Kill a Celt archer at Evora.

5. 450 BC - Kills: Celt warrior, 2 Immortals
Move a sword/spear/settler towards the new city site.
More fun messing with sliders. (10-0)

IBT - Lisboa: settler=>settler
Coimbra: spear=>spear

6. 430 BC - Maneuvering.

IBT - Retreat a Celtic horse, two more immortals appear.
MM=>construction (due in 17 at break even budget)
Guimarães: cat=>cat
G-manville: archer=>archer
Sagres: barracks=>archer
Evora: walls=>worker

7. 410 BC - Kills: Celtic horse,
Found Colina (Portuguese for hill) Start walls. (11-0)

8. 390 BC - Moving to the east spot a new spit of land.

IBT - Immortals march on Guimarães
Oporto: sword=>sword

9. 370 BC - Kills: Immortal
Lost: sword to an immortal (12-1)

IBT - Persians run away, a Celt archer steps forward.
Lisboa: settler=>settler
Guimarães: cat=>cat

10. 350 BC - Kills: Celt archer (13-1)

After Action - Not bad. A 13:1 kill ratio. The cats really help, although the Persians are starting to come in force now. The settler to the east should build where she stands. We have a second settler. I would consider red dot for the next settler, to relieve the pressure off of Guimarães. Although an argument could be made to settle on the eastern peninsula.
