I just loaded the Hall of Fame mod as someone suggested to help with micro-managing in one of my threads and I just wanted to say: This thing is the single biggest help in running my cities I have ever had, it was like I instantly got better, it's amazing.

I'd suggest it to anyone.

Yeah, it was so good a lot of it got brought over into BtS (that domestic adviser and the specialist stacker also I think).

that mod doesn't work for me and never has, but I've seen screenshots of it and I actually think it's almost like cheating... the game was not designed this way for all the screens to give that level of help, so I consider it kind of bogus for all those HOF games. it's almost like playing a different game - I prefer to play on the company's native version. the game runs purely on statistics, so any way that you improve the player notifications or statistical presentation, you are changing the very nature of the game.

The HoF mod gives away no information that you could not find in game, it just saves you a lot of time by condensing the info. I don't find it cheating, just time conserving and convenient. Obviously Firaxis felt the same way.

If anything Firaxis should of added it in themselves, all it does is tell you about your city growth when they will be unhappy and sick etc.

Obviously civs advisors are kinda slacking :smoke:

Now if only it worked in MP :satan:

I couldn't disagree more strongly. Anything which makes the game less tedious for the micromanagers is VERY important.

How can you say you prefer the native game if you cannot play the HOF mod anyway?

And... the HOF mod in my opinion does not change the nature of the game at all. That is actually the whole point of the mod - it is still the exact same game, except with some tedious tasks made easier for those who spend a lot of time playing the game. As Shoot the Moon said, the player does not get access to any new information.

Here's a hypothetical, you know how for many parts of the game there is a "turns left" counter, like for turns left to build a building, turns left to get a tech, turns left to expand borders, turns left to next GP birth etc. If the native game did not have these counters built in, would you oppose the "turns left" counters being introduced in a HOF mod? By your reasoning it seems you would oppose them.

By far the biggest complaint I have about the game and the biggest problem that discourages me from playing it is the time it takes to play. So it worries me to hear views like yours where making the game easier to get through is, in your opinion, changing the game ie. cheating.

So nothing against you Llamacat, but your view on this (mod) is IMO very unfair.

On a less serious note, it's like saying installing cruise control in cars is cheating.

I've searched these forums, and been to the official HoF thread, bit I can't find a list of what the HoF mod actually does (or these screenies you speak of)...

I've found lists of updates to the various versions, but now what the basic mod consists of. Any links?

EDIT: Oh, and that's also where you download the mod from if anyone was wondering.

cruise control in cars IS cheating, that actually is pretty close to my point. in fact people like me who only drive manual transmission would even say that if you have an automatic, you are not really "driving" :)

By that token, safety glass for car windows is cheating. If you get in an accident there should be a chance you get decapitated by a shattered piece of the windshield. It isn't fair to the first Model T drivers that your windshield spiderwebs but remains intact.

My point is, the original design of something is not always the best and improvements to the original are a good thing.

In modern life, not everything is done by hand. That would be counterproductive to the goal of progress. The HoF mod is a great example of an unaltered gameplay mod, that significantly enhances the experience of the game by automating some tedious but (for some of us) necessary tasks like checking cities for growth into unhappiness.

To be honest, I don't think it does enough for my tastes. I would like to have a 2 turn warning on growth in any city because at least some of the time I want to queue swap then whip on the next turn at that point.

Off topic:
Spoiler :

lol, don't worry, I drive a manual as well.

I don't know about you but I sometimes have to do a four and a half hour drive doing 110km/hr for about 90% of the time. When I happen to be driving an automatic with cruise control it makes life a lot easier on such long stretches of road. I can spend less time watching my speedo and hence more time watching the road and generally being able to react to dangers faster. When driving a manual on this road, I usually will need to make fewer than 5 gear changes eg. for roadworks, so I guess you wouldn't really consider that "driving" either!

Still I find it amusing you also think cruise control is cheating. I don't think I want to go any further off topic though. It's pretty silly really.

On topic: The HOF mod is an excellent idea.
