HOF Questions & Answers

Your game appears when it shows "submitted"
Two times a month all the approved games gets submitted.
This is around 1th and 16th of the month.
You will see a HoF V Update on the main page and a new thread topic in this forum.

All the HoF games count towards the VVV.

All true, except that when you upload your game it shows "submitted", when we check it it shows "accepted" and after the 1st and 16th of the month when it is visible on the tables it shows "published"!

Following the HOF rules with auto save every turn, I have been playing for two months and my recycle bin had 12 gigs of data.

Being completely computer illiterate, I have two questions.

1... Does this storage of Data put a strain on our PCs?

2.. When removed from the recycle bin, where does it go, and if still contained within the hard drive, does this cause any strains.

Thanks in advance.
TractorBoy.

1. It's only a problem if your hard drive becomes really close to being full. Windows will tell you when that happens and suggest actions like emptying the recycle bin.

2. With removing files from the bin you mean to delete or to restore them? Delete --> gone :p Restored --> C:\Users\Username\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Saves\single\auto. I'm a bit confused though why your saves are in the recycle bin if you didn't know this, as new autosaves will overwrite the older ones rather than being deleted.

Thanks, that is good to know.

1.. Removing files from the bin...I mean delete them.
2.. I have been putting them in the recycle bin at the end of every two week period (once I know they have been accepted), this seemed logical to me, but as I have previously stated, I know absolutely nothing about PCs.

The reason I asked these questions is because of the amount of crashes and stuck games I have been getting of late.

So that it's let's say 18 hours from now for the minor gauntlet?

I'm in the Netherlands so trying to figure out if and when it still pays off to start a game.

General HOF question: if you submit multiple games with the same settings, does it just keep your best, or is the first or last always the one that counts?

You have three options;
1 - Show date then press go.
2 - Show score then press go.
3 - Show all in the table viewer (you find this by clicking on the number of entries) then press go, this one sows all entries from all competitors for the chosen game. You can see who finds the game easy and who keeps plugging away!

Resources: Standard/Balanced
You must choose Standard.

Just a warning to everyone: When you play "Hemispheres" [Map Type] it automatically selects "Strategic Balance" as default instead of "Standard". And if you don't manually change it the submission probably will be automatically revoked.

Yea,

Hemisphere's is actually meant for multi-player, so I was surprised it was included in the list of maps. However, while similar it is different from Continents, so is worth keeping I guess, especially since I've already submitted a game with the map :)

This is a general question, but I figure HOFers might be most likely to know the answer.

In the UserSettings file, I've changed NumAutosavesKept to 2000, but it's only kept 165 - 98 in the "auto" folder and 68 in the "prev" subfolder. Any idea why that may be? Do I need to change anything else - free up more space, delete regular saves?

Thanks!

It only keeps your two last played games, not 2000 saves per se.
So if you played a game with Askia and finished it on turn 68 that 68 saves will be found in the auto folder. Now you start another game with Alexander and finish it on turn 98. Now these 98 saves will be in the auto folder and the prev folder will contain the previous 68 saves from the Askia game. If you start another game now the Alex saves will be moved to the prev folder and the Askia saves will be deleted.

Basically you're only required to change the NumAutosavesKept because a Marathon game can have 1500 turns.

First thing I do after finishing a game, is rename the auto folder. I then add my manual saves and the ending save to the folder. I keep this folder around until the game is accepted, just in case there are any problems.

If you do this then there are no auto saves to be put in previous, and a new auto folder will be created for your next game.

Good idea, it can take a few days to get the Civ V games accepted.
