HOF Questions & Answers

You get 6 month turns at the very end of a standard game. Wouldn't be surprised to see 1 month turns at the end of marathon.

I just finished the game with a domination for a couple of reasons. I had had one crash already, I was afraid if I continued 300 more turns I would have more crashes. Also the past ten turns, I had been deleting all units as they came up for more orders, as I thought the game was ending.

I found on the victory summary, that I had three hundred more turns, so yes a marathon game is 1500 turns. I'm going to reset the number of auto saves to 1500. Also, I had been having 4 turns per year for a while. But 4 turns times 50 more years is only 200 more or 1400, so the number of turns per year must increase yet again.

Edit: memory is cheap, so I just upgraded my RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB. Hopefully that improves my performance for my next Huge map game.

Sorry, the following applies to Civilization IV:

For Beyond the Sword, a Marathon Time Victory must contain 1500 turns.

For Vanilla Civ 4 and Warlords, a Marathon Time Victory must contain 1200 turns.

As Denniz mentioned, Time Victories always end with 2050 AD, probably the final month for BtS. Vanilla Civ 4 and Warlords never had turns that are less than a year in length.

Maybe, a "IV" or "V" could be added to the title for those of us subscribed to both and prone to be confused.

Just want to make sure I understand something. I just traded a resource to an AI for a lump sum of gold, then declared war. I was next to him and attacked him and eventually wiped him out, so it wasn't a phoney war, there were consequences (well, not really, at settler, there was no real worry :) ). That is allowed?

Pretty sure it isn't, because you're intentionally getting a lump sum of gold for free from the AI you're just about to declare war on.

If it was 35 turns into a 45 turn deal when you broke it, I think that's ok. I certainly don't check all my existing deals before declaring war, and so I've broken resource for lump sum deals that were close to completion.

based on past discussion the only time it's not allowed is if you're not capturing their capital or half their cities (ie a fake war purely to steal their gold)

So before starting any proper war, first grab all the cash that AI has on hand, to finance your own cash-rushes and prevent them doing it. Seems very exploitative to me. It was certainly a large exploit in civ3. I'm actually surprised civ5 changed back to being able to do that, after civ4 prevented DoWing someone you had an active trade deal with.

Yea, it is a bit of an exploit. But if it's not a phoney war there are consequences. And it's not as if we don't have plenty of examples in history to use, including Hitlers invasion of Russia after a treaty.

In this case I wiped Egypt off the map. I'll try to do the same for the other civ's.

Yes. Your example is allowed.

Is it allowed to continue a saved game on a different PC?

I was on holiday and started a game on my laptop and I would like to continue it on my desktop

Thank you

Shouldn't be a problem.

Well I finished it on the laptop so there won't be any problems

I was thinking that if I switch it there's absolutely no way you can tell if I replay a game or some turns when I already know the map so I didn't want that to be an issue

This is right. But remember it is OK to have the DLC installed, just not to use them in a game. If you are going to use random opponents, then moving the directories as Mallow says (not deleting them) is the way to go.

I had my first HoF submission excluded due to DLC content and want to make sure this doesn't happen again.

My game came with the DLC stuff and in the DLC folder there also is a folder called "shared". Do I need to move this too?

no. just those 2-6 and deluxe.

Question from new player on the G major/minor. I understand you can't replay from a previous save if you don't like how things have gone but do I understand correctly that you can start the whole game over - reroll your start or replay for a better score or whatever if you don't like your finish? Unlike GOM?

yes, you can submit as many games as you like but no replaying is allowed (so you have to roll a new map).

i have a couple settings questions:

Is it possible to tell Civ 5 to keep all the auto-saves automatically? That would be nice if u would want to play some games in parallel or compare similar old attempts in detail.

Is it possible to regenerate a new start with the same settings or get Civ 5 to save all the setting? (including opponents would be best)

Are the new DLC Wonders banned? The rules as written don't forbid their use, but it would seem to be within the spirit of the rules to exclude them.

No, those can't be used for the same reason the other DLC can't. Comparibility. Only free DLC at this point.

Oh Sh****. I did not read this forum before I posted my first HOF game last night (Deity Diplomacy) I did not build any of these wonders myself, but Japan did. So my assumption is that my game will not count, correct?

Sigh. Another wasted day. Well, it was my first Deity win, so not entirely wasted I guess.

You have to move the directories DLC_02, 03, 04 and Deluxe from the DLC directory. For me the path is c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization\assests\DLC. I had to move two dirs up from that path to hide them. Every time there's a new patch, you have to move them again.
Guess I'll get started on this. There has got to be an easier way . . .

I have three suggestions that I would like to float and see what happens:

1) If the HOF staff is not already overworked, I would love to see a Weekly Duel.

2) Periodically, and I do mean periodically, I think it would by interesting to have a G-Minor where the Policy Saving option is required to be checked.

3) Periodically, it would be nice to have a Gauntlet game where the players are required to download a master Turn-0 savegame. This would put every player in the exact same position, and would be a true test of relative skill.
