Hoover Dam question

Yes. When you get the Hoover Dam, all cities on the continent get a free hydro plant. Any other power plants become obsolete, and just create pollution and cost money, while at the same time, give you no benefits. So go and sell all your coal plants.

 That would probably be a good idea

I once did something like that, except I built the Pyramids on a two city island

What's unclear about them? :D

You can't use Nuclear Plants either. They will be useless as well.

No, you can use them. They will produce the usual 100% increased shield production. (Note: The hydro plant's and nuclear plant's effects won't combine to 150%). If you do build the nuclear plant, the hydro plant will still be "free" in your city and you'll also need to pay the new power plant's maintence cost.

This deal about the Hoover Dam. Thnks for the insight. I built it, and have the hydro plant around the world in way to many cities to count. My map looks like a mirror image amost with two huge continents connected be one square. (Built a very heavily fortified city at this isthmus) The bonus of the Hydo plant carried to what I would have considered, in real world sense, as a totally individual continent. Like north and south america. And you say I can sell the other hundred power plants? What about the solar plant? Does it still increase the productivity by another 50%? and reduce pollution? Ya'll don't know what kind of monster you just release upon the AI in this game.SHOW ME THE MONEY!! It seems though that this 50% increase of one's power plant production does have a 100 shield ceiling. Maybe I'm wrong, but when I built my first solar plant and expecting a 50 % increase in my current plants output, ended up at 100. Other cities too. The math didn't add up. Before the solar plant the city was at like 84. After 100. Is this a correct analysis of what's happening in my current game?

If cities are on the same continent as the city with HD, you can sell all factories. Note, however, that nuclear plant increases factory output more than your free hydro does. But you'll have to pay for it...

No, it does not stack, the maximum value is taken, see above

A solar plant does not reduce pollution, IIRC. It's been a while since I played though. It just does not produce pollution

Power plants increase the base shield production. Here's an example: Say my city Seattle produces 20 base shields. I build a factory (50% increase = 10 more shields) and now have 30 shields. Now I build the Hoover Dam and get a hydro plant (50% base increase = 10 more shields) and now have 40 shields.

Now it gets tricky when I build a nuclear power plant. Because it produces more shields (100%) it takes effect instead of the hydro plant (but that'll still be in the city). We subtract the hydro plant's shield boost (40-10=30 shields). Now we add the nuclear power plant (100% base increase = 20 more shields). Thus Seattle produces 50 shields.

Well that's interesting Regentman but how did I get a dozen cities spitting out almost 100 shields? Somehow, and I'll need to go back through the history of the cities, thing seem to be compounding. For if my city is kicking 90+, that means the base would be 60+. Well I'll look into it later.

This city has a base shield production of 54 and has a nuclear power, factory, and manufacturing plant. Together they produce 3 times the base shield production of 54 or 162.
