Just a simple question for a site I'm designing.

how are they determined?
Location?
The model computer they are (ex. windows xp)
the service provider?

BTW, an IP adress is the umber your comp gets. It's a number the mods sometimes use to ban you :p

Let's see what good 'ol Wikipedia has to say on the subject, eh?

The actual assignment of an address is not arbitrary. An organization, typically an Internet service provider, requests an assignment of a netblock from a registry such as ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers). The network number comprises a range of addresses which the organization is free to allocate as they wish. An organization that has exhausted a significant part of its allocated address space, can request another netblock.

For example, ARIN has allocated the addresses 64.78.200.0 through 64.78.207.255 to Verado, Inc. In turn, Verado has allocated the addresses 64.78.205.0 through 64.78.205.15 to Bomis. Bomis, in turn, has assigned the specific address 64.78.205.6 to the host interface that is named www.wikipedia.com.

You get it from the ISP. If you have a router (and I think dial-up too), it could change. I learned this the hard way when configuring a router and then trying to get a computer to print to a printer attached to a different computer by telling it what IP the computer is then trying to figure out why it suddenly stopped printing. To find your IP Address, go to Start, Run. Type in CMD and then type IPConfig. Your IP Address will show up then.

OK cause this was a local area thing (for my school) and I was hoping if it was location I could bust anybody else that joined

Hmm.... you could try to go on their computers and quickly do an IPConfig :twitch: :satan: .

The IP address can (1) assigned by the client, (2) assigned by the server, (3) requested by the client & assigned by the server.

Each network has it's own rules defined by the administrator. Most ISP assign the IP address, but rules vary.

Dont forget, in the IRC world. Ops use the IP address to ban you from the channel and the IRCops use the IP address to ban you from the server ;).
