From your post it sounded like you should not buy any card that you would not put in a new computer in the future.
My point was if he bought one for a future computer, it would be better to wait because it would be $300 card now, but that same card would be $100 when he actually uses it in the new computer. So why not buy a mediocre card now that is just powerful enough for his P2, then when his new computer comes around, buy the $300 card (which would now only cost him $100) instead of salavaging the card.
EDIT: And there is no doubt about the fact we agree on the memory. There would be no salavging that.
