I have looked all over both the game and the internet and have yet to find how to check which factors are causing my Civ's unhappiness. As the title states, I'm running the Community Balance Patch, but I am not running the Enhanced User Interface mod. Can anyone here help me out?
How can I see what is causing unhappiness? (CPB w/o EUI)

It's everywhere 
Tooltips in various places give you details regarding happiness/unhappiness sources...
1) Mouse over the city banners for a quick list of unhappiness sources per city
2) Mouse over "happiness" in the yield panel (upper left) in any city screen for a detailed breakdown.
3) Mouse over the happiness icon in the top panel for a global overview
4) Left click the happiness icon in the top panel to open the Economic Overview panel. There, mouse over each city name for a somewhat more concise version of what's found in the yield panel for each city.
I'd also read the changelog/guide linked in the stickied thread for an explanation of what that giant pile of numbers actually means. It's less intuitive in presentation than say Civ IV, but is more nuanced.

Okay, yeah, literally none of those things work for me. Very frustrating. Are you guys sure that these are supposed to show up without EUI, because I am very confused by all of this. For example, on the economic overview screen of my current game, it shows my Civ having 17 unhappiness, but under it all it list are the old metrics of # of cities and citizens, both at zero. Mousing over the happy face on the top of the screen is similar. It shows the original game metrics, but nothing about crime, poverty, etc

There is definitely something wrong with your install. When I get home to my computer, I will send you a screenshot showing the happiness indicators - I am also playing without EUI btw.
