How do city states use gifted units?

Of course pretty much everyone is aware that you can gift city states units to aid them in war without declaring war yourself, but I'm a little confused. Granted, when I've gifted them units previously, I've found them using them in battle and actually managing to make good use of them in many cases, but other units I've gifted them have simply disappeared as far as I am concerned. Now do city states still undergo unit maintenance and as such "sell off" additional units they don't require? I just want to know so I can plan what and how much to gift a city state I want to use to fight a proxy war?

Yes, I've certainly noticed inconsistent behavior. I wonder if the unit enters some off-screen reserve pool or something?

They are horribly stupid with units dont gift them units. I gave one of my city states 3 infantry and they lost them to pikemen... Never again

I don't think the game shows you units that city-states have garrisoned in their capital. I've definitely given them units that I would never see until they were attacked.

I found that if you're Allied with the city-state, you can watch them fight even if you don't have one of your own units over there after gifting them.

Giving city-states land units doesn't always work well--they're pretty dumb with land unit placement. But give maritime city-states sea units, and they kick epic butt. I gave Kuala Lumpar a battleship when the Romans were throwing destroyers at them, and they just tore the Romans apart. Very expensive proxy war for the poor Romans :D

I was handing out mechanized infantry left and right to all my city states, and well... this is what happens:

Singapore, down on the lower right side of the map, wiped out America. They razed everything except Washington. Stockholm at the bottom embarked across the sea and took over Arabia's capitol. Kuala Lampur, to the left of my empire, took over China.

I think Kuala Lampur is bugged because they aren't razing anything.

^ That is seriously amazing. I'm totally doing that my next game.

VVVV I think the unit you want to gift has to be in their territory.

LoL, that's very cool. :)

I have a more basic, newbish question. How exactly *do* we gift units? Every time I try it, I see a little "gift package" icon, but when I then left-click on one of my units, nothing happens. If I right-click, the gift package poofs. What am I doing wrong?

That's how it works for me. Perhaps you're trying to gift workers? You can only gift combat units, unfortunately.

You have to gift units by moving them into the city-state first. It then takes 3 turns to transfer the unit to the city-state's control, so if you wanna gift city-states to fight proxy wars for you (a hilarious strategy when played right), you'll have to get them moving early before the civ can do a lot of damage to the city-state.

I got into a dispute with Catherine the Great while playing Elizabeth, and she declared war on me. I didn't fire a shot--my allied city-states razed three of her cities

Try clicking on the actual unit rather than the unit icon. If you click on the symbol for a unit the game just thinks you're trying to select that unit (and so does), but clicking on the unit itself seems to work. Of course, for garrisoned units this means you'll have to move them out of the city they're garrisoned in before gifting

I gifted two long swordsman to an allied city state that was under attack by a trading partner of mine and he was able to repel their lesser technology invasion force. He did not get the units immediately, but he did get them after a handful of turns and put them to use.

Can City States stack their units on their tiles?

If not, the number of units you could gift them would be limited to the number of unoccupied tiles they have...is this correct? Or can you give them ++ units to fight your enemies for you?

They would either not spawn right away or they would move some units out of their territory first.
And you can give them ++ units to fight your enemies for you. They will capture their cities and burn everything to the ground.

You can gift a unit to a city state from =anywhere= on the map, simply by clicking on the city state and choosing 'gift unit' then finding the unit on the map and clicking it. I often use the units that military states give me to supliment the army of any city state that I think could use the help. There does seem to be some sort of upper limit to how many units they can have though. Also there is a bug that a unit gifted to a city state, but still during the transitional period, does not remember it was gifted during a reload. So if you save-reload during play, make sure not to gift any units during this time.

City states do NOT raze capitals, including other city states. They sometimes don't raze a city if it is close enough to their borders, but I don't know what the specifics on this are. Either way you get the new resources they acquire, and any perks associated with them (including additional research) if you have the patronage policies.

You can gift units immediately by using the unit gift icon - but only in the city state's territory. If you use the diplomacy gifting, you can do it from anywhere, but it'll take them longer to get the unit. Not sure if you get the bonus diplo points if you use the first option.

Oh, and you can gift them workers if they are in their territory, but not through the diplomacy option.
