How do I add hull sections?

The parts that add "flair" and "uniqueness" to a ship - when I click on one, the OK button is grayed out no matter what I do!

When you click on one of these hull sections (or any ship part for that matter), various dots appear on your ship's hull. These are the places where you can put whatever you clicked on. Some places work beautifully, other places are just horribly ugly, but can still be done. Just click on one of these places and it will be placed.
