How do I customize my game on PS1?

I have a PS1 edition of Civ2. I am rather surprised that there's no obvious way to change the map generation type(I consistently get pangea-ish maps). Moreover, I recently started a conquest game and found out that the restarts are enabled despite me never doing it. How can I change the map generation and the restarts?
