Sid game, arch, C3C.

I invade an island defended by 1000 troops. I land all on one tile. My landing force comprises 10 armies 300 artillery and 200 other units.

On the interturn the ai ignores my landing force. They do not attack because I am defended by an army.

The next turn I build a city on that tile. I end my turn.

On the interturn the ai attacks. The 100 cavalry wound my armies but do not destroy them. 700 infantry end their turn inside my culture border next to my city.

My turn I attack with my 300 artillery wounding 225 infantry. I survey the situation and realize that on the interturn the ai will still have enough full strength infantry to wipe out the city. So I decide to abandon the city. After all, they will not attack the stack defended by my armies IF there is no city there.

So right click on the city and scroll down .. and down ... and down ... and .... I cannot scroll down any farther... and I cannot scroll down to the menu item that says "abandon".

How do I abandon it? Is it impossible? I cannot move enough units out of the city to make the list of units sufficiently small. Remember that I already bombarded with 300 artillery. So what do I do?

AFAIK, abandon city is always available when you right click the city itself. It's not available from the mayors screen.

The problem is that there is a limit to how far you can scroll down on the pop up menu - about 250 lines or so. And the disband option is always (as far as I have seen) below the list of units. In the past I have gotten past this problem by railing units out to the neighboring tile, disbanding the city, building a road, and then moving everything back. But this option does not always present itself. Surely there are a few here, familiar with high level island invasions, who have some insight into how to deal with this.

Did you click elimination as a game rule? This will make it impossible to disband cities.

Sorry, rysingsun. I do know what you are talking about but I know of no way once you get so many immobile unit stopping you getting to the bottom of the list.

I guess that vmxa has seen this and doesn't know. If there was a way, I'd imagine that he would probably know, given the number of Sid level battles he must have played out. Maybe you could PM moonsinger as I guess that she doesn't visit civIII forums anymore and so won't have seen this? Just an idea.

Thanks Tone, but this is one of those questions that either there is a simple answer or no answer at all. It's like that question about establishing embassies ... some people use the little E button and some right click the star on the capital ... two easy ways, but if you have always used one then you may not have noticed the other.

And isn't this interesting? It's actually possible to have an enormous invasion force wiped out due to such a simple error as miscounting how many artillery shots you have taken :crazyeye:

I guess the lesson I will take is ... be careful!

I also don't have an answer to the real question of how to abandon a city with that many units there, but I wouldn't let the entire invasion force get wiped out - move all units out of the city, let the AI autoraze it and capture your artillery. Your units are all safe, and there is at least some chance you can recapture the artillery on your next turn ;).

You could give the town away, although it would result in unit teleports, which you might consider an exploit.

 ... well that would put a quick end to my invasion! But I must admit it sure beats having 300 artillery captured and my armies destroyed! But would they all go back to my capital? If that happened in my current game it would set me back 20 turns in my domination schedule.

But you know ... i've got a pile of Romans who landed on my starting island and i've got nothing to protect my core but a few brave infantry ... a cool little teleport exploit could be just the ticket to fix that mess :) ... I'll teleport a few workers back too to clean up that pillaging mess they are making :king:
